{"id":338136,"date":"2026-03-10T04:37:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T04:37:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/338136\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T04:37:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T04:37:08","slug":"new-public-swimming-pool-earmarked-to-make-splash-in-limerick-city-centre","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/338136\/","title":{"rendered":"New public swimming pool earmarked to make splash in Limerick city centre"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A NEW public swimming pool is being explored for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/231\/planning\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a> city centre.<\/p>\n<p>In a move being championed by Mayor John Moran, a new municipal sports facility is earmarked for a site near Limerick bus and rail station.<\/p>\n<p>Limerick City and County Council along with the Land Development Agency (LDA) have put out a call to consultants to carry out a feasibility study to develop the facility.<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/video\/education\/2033624\/breaking-unauthorised-encampment-moves-from-industrial-estate-to-road-outside-limerick-school.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">\u2018Unauthorised encampment\u2019 moves from industrial estate to road outside Limerick school<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Crucially, two of the three options envisaged for the new centre &#8211; planned for land near Hyde Road and Caledonian Park &#8211; will feature a swimming pool.<\/p>\n<p>The other is a leisure centre alone.<\/p>\n<p>Consultants are being asked to look at options for a 25 metre, four-lane swimming bath, alongside a four-court sports hall, fitness gym, studio spaces and a cafe.<\/p>\n<p>The document inviting companies to carry out the study states in the event of space restrictions, \u201cthe council\u2019s preference would then be for a swimming pool before a four-court sports hall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to the Leader about the plan, Mayor Moran said: \u201cI am a real big fan of this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI want it to be municipal, so then people can pay as they go,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>As things stand, there is just one public swimming pool in the city &#8211; at Grove Island in Corbally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI grew up at a time when Limerick had swimming pools in Rathbane and St Enda\u2019s, and they were fully accessible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already done repair work in Grove Island, the pool at Askeaton has opened. So now it\u2019s a case of doing the planning for something in the city centre,\u201d Mayor Moran added.<\/p>\n<p>Historically, Limerick has had fewer municipal pools than other Irish cities.<\/p>\n<p>If this goes ahead, it will mark a return of swimming to the southside for the first time since 2011 when St Enda\u2019s at Kilmallock Road closed.<\/p>\n<p>The area where the municipal facility is planned is part of a 50-acre site dubbed the Colbert Quarter by the LDA, which the executive mayor once chaired.<\/p>\n<p>The LDA is the State body responsible for increasing the supply of housing, mainly by developing public land for affordable and social homes and related infrastructure.<\/p>\n<p>The aim of the Colbert Quarter is to deliver up to 2,800 new homes, and create a new urban district at the eastern edge of the city centre, around Limerick\u2019s bus and rail hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Moran added: \u201cI\u2019m a huge fan of swimming pools. They are facilities which can be used by all ages. Even if you\u2019re not able to run, you can swim.
