{"id":338991,"date":"2026-03-10T15:53:13","date_gmt":"2026-03-10T15:53:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/338991\/"},"modified":"2026-03-10T15:53:13","modified_gmt":"2026-03-10T15:53:13","slug":"how-the-middle-east-war-could-spark-a-recession","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/338991\/","title":{"rendered":"How the Middle East war could spark a recession"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjso3p6000x28p8g1e4dfv4@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The US economy has been remarkably resilient for years, withstanding historic pandemic-era inflation, $5-a-gallon gasoline, a dramatic hiring slowdown and the Federal Reserve\u2019s war on inflation.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsocn300013b6rcz75q49o@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Now, the economy faces a new test: an actual war.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsp80k00043b6r01x66mn3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The war with Iran has sparked an epic oil supply disruption \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/09\/economy\/oil-price-shock\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">biggest in history<\/a> \u2014 and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/business\/tracking-oil-gas-prices-vis\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">price spike,<\/a> driving up the cost of everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/06\/business\/video\/gas-prices-oil-iran-war-lead-jake-tapper\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">gasoline<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/08\/business\/soaring-diesel-prices-wider-impact\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">diesel<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/03\/06\/united-airlines-ceo-scott-kirby.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">jet fuel<\/a>.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjspm9r00063b6rb0ezhg7e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Economists warn that the war has increased the risk of a recession. And the longer the crisis lasts, the greater the danger to an economy that already looked vulnerable before the chaos in the Middle East.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjspm9s00073b6rbt3jui10@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe US is and has been on the precipice of recession for quite some time. It only requires one thing to knock us over. Could oil do it? Absolutely,\u201d said Justin Wolfers, an economics professor at the University of Michigan.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsrnho00093b6rddfoin8s@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Though the war could do real damage to the US economy, most economists don\u2019t expect a recession.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsrqyj000b3b6rtyjlyyal@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The stock market has retreated, but not dramatically enough to imply that Wall Street is penciling in an imminent downturn.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2262961566.jpg\" alt=\"Cargo ships and tankers are seen off coast city of Fujairah, in the Strait of Hormuz in the northern Emirate on February 25.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"4180\" width=\"6270\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjstolc000d3b6r9j08x5ak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And if there is a quick end to the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, oil prices would likely return toward pre-war levels.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsukbc000f3b6rnljmgiom@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Still, the <a href=\"https:\/\/kalshi.com\/markets\/kxrecssnber\/recession\/kxrecssnber-26\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">odds of a recession this year<\/a> spiked to as high as 35% early on Monday, when US oil prices briefly hit as high as $119 a barrel, according to prediction market Kalshi. That\u2019s up from about 20% in early February before the US military build-up in the Middle East.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsvbxq000h3b6rpf8p6kjb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe risk of a recession has materially increased, but we\u2019re not there yet. The US is a $30 trillion dynamic and resilient beast. It has plenty of room to absorb an oil-based shock,\u201d said Joe Brusuelas, chief US economist at RSM.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsvbxq000i3b6ri8qkko9x@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The key thresholds for a recession, according to Brusuelas, are if oil prices jump to $125 a barrel, gas prices climb to $4.25 a gallon and inflation heats up to 4% a year.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsx3ts000r3b6ruv3ew1qk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Gas prices have already surged by 50 cents, going from $2.98 a gallon before the war started to $3.48 a gallon on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsxp19000t3b6rbu1k1rzz@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThe speed with which it\u2019s hitting gas stations has left consumers shocked,\u201d Diane Swonk, KPMG\u2019s chief economist, told CNN\u2019s Zain Asher on Monday. \u201cBut it would need to get a lot worse\u201d to get to a recession.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsxp19000u3b6reuxjwbfb@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Every sustained $10-a-barrel increase in oil prices could cost the typical US household close to an extra $450 annually, according to Moody\u2019s Analytics chief economist Mark Zandi.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsxp19000v3b6r5xixjh4b@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The hit to household budgets is key because the US remains a consumer-led economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p>       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/gettyimages-2263925951.jpg\" alt=\"People walk along Broadway with shopping bags in Manhattan on February 27, 2026 in New York City.\" class=\"image_large__dam-img image_large__dam-img--loading\" onload=\"this.classList.remove('image_large__dam-img--loading')\" onerror=\"imageLoadError(this)\" height=\"2000\" width=\"3000\" loading=\"lazy\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjsxp19000w3b6rblvxq3fl@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            If Americans cut back on shopping, traveling and going out to eat, businesses would be forced to lay off workers, causing consumers to cut back further. That can become a doom loop that ends in recession.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt70kc000z3b6r6xt52hct@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the job market looks more vulnerable than in 2022, when there was an oil price shock from Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine. Back then, the economy was adding hundreds of thousands of jobs per month.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt73qs00113b6ra44a4gab@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Flash forward to today: The US economy added just 116,000 jobs for all of 2025, the lowest outside of a recession since 2002. In fact, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/06\/economy\/us-jobs-report-february\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">economy has lost jobs in five out of the past nine months<\/a>, after going years without a month of job losses.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt73qs00123b6ron2vhn4w@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The job losses and surging gas prices are \u201ca very nasty one-two punch to the economy,\u201d said David Kelly, chief global strategist at JPMorgan Asset Management. \u201cBut I still bet that the economy will muddle its way through this.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt73qs00133b6rspqqh7gf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Kelly pointed to expectations for bigger tax refunds to American families made possible by the One Big Beautiful Bill, President Donald Trump\u2019s signature tax and spending law.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt73qs00143b6rvxupdfw6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cIt\u2019s just a pity that people will have to spend so much of their tax refunds just to fill up their SUVs,\u201d said Kelly.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjt9ktv00183b6rcbigrv4z@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A second related risk is that the war and energy price spike cause a bear market, with US stocks seeing a 20% decline from prior highs.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjteghl001a3b6r2gxba0i5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A market plunge would likely depress spending \u2014 even by the affluent families carrying the weight of today\u2019s K-shaped economy.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtf5xw001c3b6r6oauksak@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cI don\u2019t even think oil has to go to $120 or $150 a barrel. If it just stays at $100 and pushes the stock market lower, it could have an adverse impact on higher-income and higher-wealth consumers,\u201d Ed Yardeni, president of investment advisory Yardeni Research, told CNN in a phone interview on Monday.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtf5xx001d3b6ryd9jag04@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yardeni still thinks the United States will avoid a downturn. But the risk of a negative wealth effect is one reason that on Monday he upped his odds of a market \u201cmeltdown\u201d that includes a recession from 5% to 20%.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtr2mn001l3b6rx9bt4g8q@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A third pathway to a recession would be through a major blow to business confidence.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtrfve001n3b6rkl6f89dt@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            It\u2019s easy to see how employers, who were already on the fence about hiring or expanding, would be deterred by a sustained oil price gain.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtrfve001o3b6r2kjfx6p6@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/03\/06\/economy\/us-jobs-report-february\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">The jobs report last Friday<\/a> was not good, and there is a danger that hiring could pull back even more,\u201d said JPMorgan\u2019s Kelly. \u201cWe\u2019re more vulnerable today. It would only take one more shock to put us in the soup.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtrfve001p3b6r9u8i6rrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But there are key differences between today\u2019s oil shocks and past ones.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtrfve001q3b6r6j9amxna@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Unlike in 2022, when gas prices skyrocketed to $5 a gallon, the United States \u2014 not Russia \u2014 has a large say in when this war ends.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjtte2b001u3b6rbxln865h@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Perhaps America controlling its own military fate in the Gulf was a factor in Trump telling CBS News that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/world\/live-news\/iran-war-us-israel-trump-03-09-26?post-id=cmmjkqvxn00003b6ssfen4h0m\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the war is \u201cvery complete.\u201d<\/a> Of course, ending the war would not be enough to end the disruption in the Strait of Hormuz.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjttrsf001w3b6rmdsheldr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Yet Trump\u2019s comments helped ease investor panic. After spiking to as high as $119 a barrel late Sunday into Monday, US oil prices tumbled to $92 a barrel.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjttrsf001x3b6rgwyp79ud@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And the United States is now a net energy exporter.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjttrsf001y3b6rhwj6eyah@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            That means that while many consumers are hurt by high energy prices, some parts of the US economy benefit, including ones in the oil and natural gas industry and those who own shares in fossil fuel companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjttrsf001z3b6rhrw550rc@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            And while it\u2019s still a global market, the United States is not nearly as dependent on foreign oil as in the past.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmmjttrsf00203b6r7lsox3c7@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis episode obviously raises the risk, but I don\u2019t see it leading to a recession,\u201d said Glenn Hubbard, a former top economist to President George W.
