\n\tAcademy Award-winning French actor Juliette Binoche<\/a> took a playful jab at Timoth\u00e9e Chalamet on Wednesday when asked to weigh in on the \u201cMarty Supreme\u201d Oscar nominee\u2019s recent comments\u00a0about ballet and opera. <\/p>\n

\n\tDuring \u201cA CNN & Variety Town Hall Event<\/a>\u201d last month, Chalamet said that he didn\u2019t want movie theaters to go the way of \u201cballet or opera,\u201d where artists want to \u201ckeep this thing alive\u201d even though \u201cno one cares\u201d about it anymore. Questioned about the remarks during a lively Q&A session at Thessaloniki Intl. Documentary Festival, Binoche quipped: \u201cI thought cinema was a dying art.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBinoche, who is attending the Greek fest with her dance-themed directorial debut \u201cIn-I In Motion,\u201d was speaking to a packed auditorium during a masterclass on her journey from acting to directing.<\/p>\n

\n\tTowards the tail end of the Q&A, an audience member asked the Oscar-winning star of \u201cThe English Patient\u201d what she thought about Chalamet\u2019s viral comments, which drew the ire of pundits ranging from London\u2019s Royal Ballet and Opera<\/a> to \u201cThe View\u201d hosts Whoopi Goldberg<\/a> and Sunny Hostin to ballet dancer Misty Copeland<\/a>, who helped to promote \u201cMarty Supreme.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBinoche, who was briefly flummoxed by the question, needed to be brought up to speed on the controversy before brushing it aside.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter what he\u2019s saying. It doesn\u2019t matter. Don\u2019t make it big,\u201d she said. \u201cWhat nourishes your heart and soul is what is important. You can watch a lot of films that are empty and make you dry at the end. What counts is what is nourishing your soul and life.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe hour-long session on Wednesday morning found Binoche delving deep into the creative process behind \u201cIn-I In Motion,\u201d a candid documentary account of her 2008 stage collaboration with British dancer and choreographer Akram Khan.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tThe film, which premiered in San Sebastian last year and next heads to CPH:DOX in Copenhagen, was assembled wholly from rehearsal footage and live recording of the finished stage production. <\/p>\n

\n\tIn his review of the film,\u00a0Variety\u2019s Guy Lodge said<\/a> it \u201caffords viewers raw access to the creation process, and the rare fascination of watching two leading artists at times out of their depth, figuring out new dimensions to their craft on the hoof, so to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSpeaking in Thessaloniki, Binoche opened up about the nearly two decade-long process of getting her directorial debut off the ground, revealing how dance and acting taught her how to \u201cembrace\u201d her fears and sharing what she learned working alongside acclaimed directors such as\u00a0Leos Carax, Abbas Kiarostami and Olivier Assayas.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cBe yourself. Trust your intuition. Don\u2019t try to be somebody else,\u201d she said. \u201cEverybody\u2019s different. Just trust your difference. And go for it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBinoche also had praise for Robert Redford, who died last September, for encouraging her to make a movie based on the acclaimed 2008 stage performance with Khan, which the late actor saw live in New York.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI could hear what Robert Redford said to me, \u2018You\u2019ve got to make a film out of this show.\u2019 I just heard him. And I knew he was right, but I didn\u2019t know how to do it,\u201d Binoche said. \u201cI didn\u2019t have a production [company]. I didn\u2019t have the money. I didn\u2019t know what editor [I would work with].\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tIt was only when producers Ola Str\u00f8m and Sol\u00e8ne L\u00e9ger got involved, the French star added, that she understood that \u201cthe world want[ed] me to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tAsked about the art of documentary filmmaking, Binoche downplayed her contribution to the form, noting that \u201cIn-I In Motion\u201d found her \u2014 as has been the case throughout her acclaimed career \u2014 in front of the camera. (The film uses footage shot by Binoche\u2019s sister, Marion Stalens.)\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\tYet Binoche paid tribute to \u201cthe master of documentaries,\u201d Frederick Wiseman, who died last month, while celebrating the broader community of documentary filmmakers as unheralded \u201cwarriors\u201d of the craft.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cThey try to survive. They don\u2019t earn a lot of money with their films. It\u2019s a struggle, but I think a struggle that\u2019s worth it because we need those documents in order to be closer to the truth of what\u2019s going on,\u201d she said. \u201cPeople being on the spot and risking their lives, sometimes, in order to have the actual reality of what is going on is very laudable.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThe Thessaloniki Intl.
