The Garda Armed Support unit swooped in to arrest a man in Cork city this afternoon. In a dramatic incident on Patrick’s Hill after lunchtime, as armed officers surrounded him.<\/p>\n
CorkBeo<\/a> reports that the man was arrested after he was reported to have a weapon. The arrest took place at the junction of Patrick’s Hill and Coburg Street, just off MacCurtain Street, before 2 pm this afternoon, as shoppers and passersby watched as the man was placed in an ASU squad car.<\/p>\n The man, who is in his 50s, was stopped by Gardai after a report of a man in possession of a weapon in the Paul Street area of the city centre shortly after 1 pm. He was arrested and taken to a station in the city, where he is being detained. A Garda spokesperson said investigations are ongoing.<\/p>\n The spokesperson said: “Garda\u00ed received a report of a man in possession of a weapon in the Paul Street area of Cork city this Wednesday afternoon 11th March 2026 at approximately 1:10 pm. A male in his 50s was arrested and conveyed to a Garda Station in Cork city. He is currently being detained under the Provisions of Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1984. Investigations are ongoing.”<\/p>\n The specialist armed unit uses pistols and MP7 machine guns, as well as less-lethal launchers that fire foam rounds.
