Johnny Vaughan burst onto our screens back in 1997 on The Big Breakfast<\/a> alongside Denise Van Outen<\/a>.<\/p>\n Since those early days, Johnny, 58, has gone on to become a broadcasting legend.<\/p>\n He\u2019s worked everywhere from the BBC to Capital Radio and TalkSport. Inbetween that he even found time to be a film critic. <\/p>\n In 2015, however, Johnny helped launch Radio X, joining the new national broadcaster to present the drivetime show.<\/p>\n With Radio X (formerly XFM) celebrating it\u2019s 10th anniversary on September 21 Metro was lucky enough to sit down with Johnny and talk about him and his career. <\/p>\n We spoke about the station\u2019s 10th anniversary, his historic fallout with Denise, and why the general public is better to chat to than celebs.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Thank you very much! It doesn\u2019t feel like ten years. Most anniversaries people celebrate, particularly wedding ones, really feel like it after ten. <\/p>\n People go, \u201cit seems like yesterday\u201d, but you know they\u2019re lying. This has really gone fast.\u00a0<\/p>\n It\u2019s nice to hear someone take so much joy from their job<\/p>\n This is the best! Working breakfast shows for 14 years just takes over your whole life: what you can eat, when you\u2019re going to go to bed. <\/p>\n You go to something in the evening, all the time you\u2019re looking at your watch thinking, \u201cI\u2019ve got to get up at 4.30\u201d. <\/p>\n Now, I\u2019m lucky because every day, I sit in a room, ask for something from listeners, get entertained by their responses, then listen to the best music I could ask for. I\u2019m just in a really lovely situation.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t That\u2019s the cool thing! Radio X is this amazing corridor in time where all songs are equal. <\/p>\n I think one of the nice things in rock and roll is that it\u2019s not that nostalgic: It\u2019s just all one era, even if it\u2019s 40 years old. <\/p>\n We were playing The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin, and I was listening to it thinking, \u201cthis never dates\u201d, that\u2019s how far advanced they were, and if music doesn\u2019t date, then there\u2019s no room for nostalgia, only for people to discover it.\u00a0<\/p>\n 2025 seems to have tapped into 90s nostalgia, particularly with Oasis\u2019s comeback.<\/p>\n I get what you\u2019re saying, I saw the Rolling Stones in 82\/83, and back then I thought they were old. <\/p>\n I thought \u201cthis is my parents\u2019 band\u201d, but once you\u2019re an adult with music, that\u2019s it. They\u2019re locked in. So Oasis, if I was born in the 90s and seeing them now, they\u2019d feel like a retro band.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t As I go on, I like my regulars like Woody Harrelson. He was in 60 Seconds, actually, and was asked, \u201cFour things he loves about London<\/a>\u201c. He said, parks, pubs, football and me, because his driver played the show at the end of every day. What an honour! <\/p>\n Once you\u2019ve got one of your favourite actors as a friend to the show, it doesn\u2019t really leave much, does it? I\u2019ve pretty well interviewed them all\u2026 but sometimes never meet your heroes.<\/p>\n Is there a hero you shouldn\u2019t have met?<\/p>\n No. Going live every day, you don\u2019t get much time for reflection. It\u2019s passed very quickly, so I\u2019m just lucky to interview the people I\u2019ve interviewed. <\/p>\n But on the show, I\u2019ll get someone on the phone telling me a ridiculous story, and I\u2019d take that any day over a celebrity hyping something, and coming out with an answer they\u2019ve given 1000 times before.\u00a0<\/p>\n Have you been caught out like that before in interviews?<\/p>\n I used to go around the world interviewing Hollywood A-listers, when there was A-list like that. <\/p>\n I\u2019d interview someone and ask something, they\u2019d go, \u201cthat\u2019s a great question, let me think\u201d, I\u2019m thinking, \u201cBoom!\u201d \u2013 but then watch Good Morning Britain<\/a> and see them giving the same story, and you\u2019re thinking [growls].\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Stallone by a country mile. Rob Brydon<\/a>\u2019s a shocker for it \u2013 the thing of \u2018that\u2019s a great question\u2019 \u2013 he\u2019s done it for years. Ricky Gervais<\/a> is criminal for it\u2026 but it ties in with the gift of comedy<\/a>. <\/p>\n A great stand-up comedian, like they are, goes on tour and night after night tells the same joke, but sells it as though it\u2019s the first time they\u2019ve done it. But I mean, it\u2019s bad for an interviewer, because you\u2019re hoping you\u2019ll get something original.\u00a0<\/p>\n You and Denise Van Outen famously fell out during the Big Breakfast years. Do you have any regrets about what happened between you both in hindsight?\u00a0<\/p>\n I\u2019ve only ever found her hilarious. She might have fallen out with me, but I never fell out with her. I just love Denise, won\u2019t hear a word against her. <\/p>\n Sometimes you don\u2019t spot things, which is me being maybe insensitive, and I really apologise to her for that. But we\u2019ve done Gogglebox, I see her quite a bit, speak to her most weeks still. <\/p>\n No matter how we\u2019ve fallen out, she\u2019s always been there for me, and I hope she feels I\u2019ve always been there for her.\u00a0<\/p>\n \t\t Gazza\u2019s [Paul Gascoigne] probably got it. He\u2019s a bloomin\u2019 legend, isn\u2019t he? I mean, he turned up when there was that [Raoul Moat manhunt] with KFC and a four pack! <\/p>\n I went to see a play about it the other night, and whoever wrote it obviously thought, \u201cthis is the most extraordinary scene ever. I must write a play about this\u201d. It was f**king amazing.<\/p>\n \t\t I don\u2019t, but that\u2019s the great thing about radio. I just listen to my favourite music. What I\u2019d like to be is an ideal passenger in your car, who hopefully knows when to shut up more than I do. <\/p>\n I amuse you for a bit with a funny story, tell you what I heard the other day, and you go, \u201cthat\u2019s funny, put a record on\u201d. That\u2019s what I hope to be.\u00a0<\/p>\n What\u2019s on your personal playlist right now? Any surprises?<\/p>\n At the moment, I\u2019ve gone Oasis mad again, [Richard] Ashcroft, and also Cast. I\u2019ve just been going back and enjoying that Madchester thing. Apart from that, I\u2019ve been learning piano, so I\u2019ve been listening to a lot more Chopin and Schubert.
