\n\tIt\u2019s one thing to be naturally as charismatic and magnetic as Cardi B \u2014 her testimony<\/a> during last month\u2019s assault lawsuit was as compulsively entertaining as any binge watch \u2014 yet it\u2019s another to marry it to skill. It\u2019s been eight years since the rapper left smoking stiletto prints in her wake with her titanic breakthrough single \u201cBodak Yellow,\u201d and seven since she released her debut album \u201cInvasion of Privacy.\u201d That record was a mission statement, a flag-planting arrival that showed the breadth of her talent was more than just the sum of her reality TV and viral parts.<\/p>\n

\n\tCardi hasn\u2019t exactly been out of the music game since then, releasing maintenance singles like \u201cEnough (Miami)\u201d and \u201cWAP\u201d featuring Megan Thee Stallion. But a sophomore album after this long can make or break a career, especially when it\u2019s cloaked in this much hype. Cardi is more than up for the task with \u201cAm I the Drama?,\u201d an unflinching, raw and refined record that never loses its footing despite its robust runtime (23 tracks over 71 minutes). It\u2019s an album that demands rapt attention as Cardi parses over the very public trials and tribulations she\u2019s faced since her debut, inevitably emerging on the other side as one of the great rap records of 2025.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo start: Is Cardi the drama, or does the drama find her? It\u2019s hard to tell who\u2019s passing the buck on \u201cAm I the Drama?,\u201d yet she wastes no time confronting it. On album opener \u201cDead\u201d featuring Summer Walker, she makes it clear that she\u2019s not here to play: \u201cI\u2019m collecting body bags like they purses \/ I don\u2019t even rap no more, I drive hearses.\u201d She\u2019s quick to check her rap foes and has both fanged and vulnerable moments while grappling with her split from Offset. There\u2019s a lot of ground to cover since \u201cPrivacy,\u201d and Cardi spends the album pointedly treading through it.<\/p>\n

\n\tWhile \u201cPrivacy\u201d was an album that somewhat kowtowed to pop crossover, \u201cAm I the Drama?\u201d skirts the big hooks and flashy beats and lands on something darker yet far from opaque. There\u2019s immediacy and a momentum that propels it forward, rich with wordplay so clever and comedic that it could easily set the stage for a future in stand-up. She tries on different sounds and styles \u2014\u00a0\u201cBodega Baddie\u201d is a merengue thumper, while \u201cWhat\u2019s Going On\u201d featuring Lizzo bravely interpolates 4 Non Blondes\u2019 \u201cWhat\u2019s Up\u201d to workable results \u2014\u00a0yet she holds it all together with a commanding flow and unmatched charisma.<\/p>\n

\n\tThat charm can curdle if you\u2019ve fallen out of Cardi\u2019s good graces, and she appears to be taking swipes at JT and Ice Spice on \u201cMagnet.\u201d No one feels the sting more than Bia, a rapper with whom she\u2019s sparred in the past. On \u201cPretty & Petty,\u201d she leaves no stone unturned: \u201cName five Bia songs, gun pointin\u2019 to your head,\u201d she sneers, taking a pause. \u201cBow, I\u2019m dead.\u201d The one-liners keep on rolling. \u201cWhy you all in people\u2019s face with that shitty mouth? \/ Diarrhea Bia, breath so stank you can smell her \u2018fore you see her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSure, rap beef makes for good entertainment, but Cardi is far from one-note (as we\u2019ve repeatedly learned), and the album\u2019s tracks concerning her divorce from Offset give it much-needed heft. \u201cI\u2019m sick of fighting, sick of crying, shit, it\u2019s 4 a.m. \/ If you don\u2019t answer this time, I\u2019ll never call again,\u201d she tells him on \u201cShower Tears.\u201d On \u201cMagnet,\u201d she shouts out the \u201choes that wear the pants like Kamala\u201d who \u201cgot my baby daddy acting like my baby mama.\u201d It isn\u2019t all scorched earth, though: \u201cMan of Your Word\u201d is the album\u2019s emotional centerpiece, lending Offset a bit of grace despite his infidelity. \u201cDon\u2019t know if I\u2019m mad at me or you,\u201d she states, reckoning over what went wrong and maturely wishing him the best.<\/p>\n

\n\tCardi tacks on two previously released singles, \u201cUp\u201d and \u201cWAP,\u201d likely as a streaming ploy to juice first-week numbers though they slot comfortably with the rest of the record. \u201cAm I the Drama?\u201d is stacked with features from a laundry list of artists, including Cash Cobain, Selena Gomez, Lourdiz and Janet Jackson on \u201cPrincipal\u201d (a misdirect, as it merely samples \u201cThe Pleasure Principle\u201d). Yet Cardi is the central force of \u201cAm I the Drama?,\u201d an album that shrugs off the threat of a sophomore slump with fire and brimstone and, above all, heart.<\/p>\n
