A doctor who was working in University Hospital Limerick has been jailed for eight years for raping and sexually assaulting a young nurse, whom he took a selfie with while she was asleep.<\/p>\n
Judge Sean Gillane passed sentence on Louay Kila, 31, a Moroccan national with an address at 61, Cois Luachra, Dooradoyle, Limerick.<\/p>\n
Judge Gillane imposed an eight-year jail sentence for rape and four years for sexual assault, with the sentences to run concurrently.<\/p>\n
Kila was convicted following a trial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Limerick, last week. After the jury returned an unanimous verdict, he was found guilty of one count of rape and one count of sexual assault.<\/p>\n
Judge Gillane summarised the evidence on Friday, taking into account last week’s victim impact statement of the young nurse.<\/p>\n
Kila raped the nurse on March 2, 2024, and was arrested on March 26, 2024. He was charged with sexual assault in March 2024, and with rape in October 2024. He was then suspended from the register of medical practitioners in March 2025.<\/p>\n
Judge Gillane referred to the victim impact statement which set out how the young woman\u2019s life had changed after the rape in 2024, how it impacted her career, \u201chaving studied\u201d for a number of years to become a nurse.<\/p>\n
The court heard she had worked a 13-hour shift in UHL and made arrangements to go out with her friends the same night. She intended to stay the night at her friend\u2019s apartment.<\/p>\n
At a bar with her friends, CCTV footage showed she talked to Kila, who was \u201cknown to her in a general sense\u201d as they both worked in UHL.<\/p>\n
The judge said the accused enquired about a relationship she was in at the time, noting a \u201cdegree of animus\u201d between the accused and the \u201cother male\u201d.<\/p>\n
After going out, the victim stopped in a takeaway before going back to her friend\u2019s apartment. The judge said the victim was \u201cintoxicated\u201d, which was \u201creflected in the CCTV footage\u201d.<\/p>\n
At the apartment, she removed her make-up and changed into a \u201cwearable blanket\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n
When Kila arrived to the apartment with his friends, the victim detailed how she was on a couch in the living room, with the accused sat on a chair opposite.\u00a0<\/p>\n
They talked about work, and Kila asked her again about her relationship with the other man. She said she was in the \u201cearly stages of dating\u201d that man.<\/p>\n
The victim fell asleep on the couch, and awoke to the feeling of a \u201cpenis in her vagina and thrust motions\u201d.<\/p>\n
Once she \u201cmanaged\u201d to open her eyes, she described seeing Kila\u2019s erect penis. She was in a state of \u201cpanic\u201d and \u201cfreezing\u201d.<\/p>\n
Kila left before returning and proceeded to \u201cdigitally penetrate\u201d her and was \u201cpersistent in doing so\u201d \u2014 despite being told to stop. She pushed him off and pulled her legs up, crossing them, to stop him.<\/p>\n
The accused left to go to the hallway, and returned to the sitting room once more, and grabbed her face, \u201cgoing in for a kiss\u201d \u2014 an action the victim \u201cvividly demonstrated to the jury\u201d. She told him to f*** off.<\/p>\n
Her friends found her in a \u201cstate of shock\u201d, as she found it \u201cdifficult to breathe\u201d.<\/p>\n
Once she checked her phone, she found a Snapchat message from the man she was dating, stating \u201cwe\u2019re done\u201d with a photograph of her asleep and of Kila kissing her cheek.<\/p>\n
The judge said it was clear she could not have taken the photograph, which was sent from her own Snapchat account.<\/p>\n
The judge said this detail was of \u201csignificance\u201d.<\/p>\n
The victim received a text from Kila the following day, which read: \u201cI hope you\u2019re doing okay. I\u2019ve been thinking about what happened the other night. I didn\u2019t mean to upset you. Your wellbeing is important to me and I want to make sure you\u2019re okay.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Referring to her victim impact statement, the judge said her \u201cevidence speaks for itself, more adequately than any summary I can attempt\u201d.<\/p>\n
He took into consideration the \u201cimmediate effect on her career path\u201d, and on the role she had \u201cworked so hard to achieve\u201d.<\/p>\n
He said she suffered anxiety and was prescribed medication, and impacted her family life.<\/p>\n
Judge Gillane said the victim showed \u201cresilience\u201d during the proceedings.<\/p>\n
The judge noted while there was no \u201cdoctor relationship factors\u201d, Kila was \u201cacutely aware and deliberately exploited\u201d the victim\u2019s vulnerability. He said the young woman could \u201cnever have anticipated she was in danger\u201d.<\/p>\n
The judge added she was \u201coblivious\u201d to the fact a picture had been taken, which was described during the trial as a \u201cdeliberate act of humiliation”.<\/p>\n
