\n\tFrom \u201cKpop Demon Hunters<\/a>\u201d to BTS\u2019s upcoming album<\/a>, tour and livestreaming concert<\/a>, K-pop is well into its global domination phase.<\/p>\n

\n\tBut the Korean music phenomenon is really just part of a bigger movement across Asia, where markets like Japan, India and China are poised to follow in K-pop\u2019s footsteps, according to a new Luminate<\/a> special report, \u201cAsia: A Global Force in Music.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

\n\tThe report\u2019s author, Luminate analyst Robert Steiner, explains the concept of \u201cglocalization\u201d and how local artists in Asia are gaining international visibility.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cLocal artists and sounds end up getting platformed on streaming platforms as locals adopt streaming, which then allows these stars to get picked up by the algorithms and the playlist, and then achieve this international level of visibility and recognition that we haven\u2019t really seen up until now,\u201d he says on the latest episode of the\u00a0Variety\u00a0podcast \u201cStrictly Business<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tSteiner also discusses the potential for J-pop to follow K-pop\u2019s lead and expand globally, given the recent growth of streaming in Japan. Then there\u2019s\u00a0India\u2019s music market, which is characterized by high consumption but lagging monetization.<\/p>\n

\n\tIn addition, Steiner delves into China\u2019s music market, which is known for its innovative monetization strategies, including Tencent\u2019s Super VIP model in China, where the U.S. is getting a lesson in how streaming platforms offer additional benefits to their most passionate fans.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cChinese superfans were ahead\u2026 for all the virtual stuff,\u201d said Steiner. \u201cI think ultimately, that\u2019s what gave the Super VIP model so much momentum in China. And that\u2019s something that I think a lot of these Western companies will have to keep in mind.\u201d<\/p>\n
