David Gilmour<\/a>\u2018s legendary \u2018Black Strat\u2019 has become the most expensive guitar ever sold at auction.<\/p>\n

The former Pink Floyd<\/a> member used the model when recording the band\u2019s classic albums \u2018The Dark Side Of The Moon\u2019 (1973), \u2018Wish You Were Here\u2019 (1975), \u2018Animals\u2019 (1977) and \u2018The Wall\u2019 (1979).<\/p>\n

Gilmour played the instrument \u2013 a black Fender Stratocaster \u2013 for his solo on \u2018Comfortably Numb\u2019 from the latter record, and when making the songs \u2018Money\u2019 and \u2018Shine On You Crazy Diamond\u2019.<\/p>\n

His \u2018Black Strat\u2019 sold for an enormous $14.55million (\u00a311million) at Christie\u2019s auction as part of \u2018The Jim Irsay Collection\u2019 in New York yesterday (Thursday March 12), per Rolling Stone<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Prior to the sale, the guitar had been estimated to fetch between $2million (\u00a31,495,050) and $4million (\u00a33million).<\/p>\n

The sale made the model the most expensive guitar ever sold, eclipsing 2020\u2019s $6million (\u00a34.5million) sale of the acoustic guitar Kurt Cobain played<\/a> at Nirvana<\/a>\u2019s MTV Unplugged show in 1993. Cobain\u2019s rare Martin D-18E was then donated to the London Royal College Of Music<\/a> late last year.<\/p>\n

Irsay first purchased Gilmour\u2019s \u2018Black Strat\u2019 at auction via Christie\u2019s in 2019<\/a>, breaking the world record for any guitar sold at auction at the time. Earlier that year, the musician announced that he\u2019d be selling 120 of his iconic guitars<\/a> to \u201cgive joy\u201d to other people and raise funds to help fight climate change.<\/p>\n

\u201cThese guitars have been very good to me,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re my friends. They have given me lots of music. I just think it\u2019s time that they went off and served someone else. I have had my time with them. And of course the money that they will raise will do an enormous amount of good in the world, and that is my intention.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018The Jim Irsay Collection: Icons Of Popular Culture\u2019<\/a> auction is described as \u201cone of the greatest troves of memorabilia ever assembled, meticulously compiled over decades by the late philanthropist, passionate music lover, and owner and CEO of the Indianapolis Colts\u201d.<\/p>\n

The listing added: \u201cA portion of the proceeds of these sales will be donated to philanthropic causes supported by Jim Irsay during his lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

Last December, Gilmour celebrated Pink Floyd\u2019s \u2018Wish You Were Here\u2019 landing the Christmas Number One album spot<\/a>.<\/p>\n

It marked the band\u2019s second UK Number One record of the year, following on from \u2018Pink Floyd At Pompeii \u2013 MCMLXXII\u2019<\/a>. The live album of a 1971 show was released as a concert film in 1972, and re-released with newly mixed audio in 2025. A 4K version of the movie arrived<\/a>, too.<\/p>\n

Pink Floyd also shared the music video for the \u2018Wish You Were Here\u2019 title track<\/a> over Christmas, 50 years after its release.<\/p>\n

Last autumn, Gilmour said there was \u201cno possible way\u201d that he would ever work with his former Pink Floyd bandmate Roger Waters again<\/a>.<\/p>\n

David Gilmour released his fifth solo album, \u2018Luck And Strange\u2019<\/a>, in 2024.
