Donegal County Council has said it would be uneconomical to remove a large fallen tree from the River Lennon in Ramelton, despite concerns it has become an eyesore in the town.<\/p>\n
Local Councillor Pauric McGarvey had asked the council to remove the tree that fell on the Mall side of the river two years ago during a storm.<\/p>\n
He said it\u2019s now one of the first things people see when entering the town.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s like an eyesore when you come into Ramelton,\u201d he told Tuesday\u2019s meeting of the Letterkenny\u2013Milford Municipal District.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s taking away from the view of the Mall and the bridge.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf any buses are coming down, they won\u2019t look at the Fish House. They will look at the tree in the river,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
In response, the council said an assessment had been carried out and established that the tree is not causing an obstruction to the flow of the river.<\/p>\n
Cllr McGarvey was told: \u201cconsidering that in time the tree will naturally disperse and the cost and safety implications of removing the tree, that it would be currently uneconomic to remove the tree.\u201d<\/p>\n
Councillor Liam Blaney suggested that if the council was not planning to remove it, someone locally may take action.<\/p>\n
Senior Roads Engineer David McIlwaine added that any removal of a tree from the river would have to be carried out safely, which increases the cost of the operation.<\/p>\n
