{"id":347608,"date":"2026-03-15T14:28:09","date_gmt":"2026-03-15T14:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/347608\/"},"modified":"2026-03-15T14:28:09","modified_gmt":"2026-03-15T14:28:09","slug":"irelands-peter-lynch-clocks-5952-to-finish-fifth-in-new-york-city-half-marathon-the-irish-times","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/347608\/","title":{"rendered":"Ireland\u2019s Peter Lynch clocks 59:52 to finish fifth in New York City Half Marathon \u2013 The Irish Times"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Peter Lynch clocked a breakthrough time of 59 minutes 52 seconds to finish in fifth in Sunday\u2019s New York City Half Marathon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Although the point-to-point nature of the course in New York makes the race ineligible for record purposes, the 28-year-old becomes the first Irish athlete to break the one-hour barrier for the 13.1-mile distance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Due to the ineligibility of the New York race, the current national half-marathon record of 60:22, set by Cork\u2019s Fearghal Curtin in Copenhagen last September, remains intact.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Curtin\u2019s half-marathon record came a month before he also broke the Irish marathon record last year, winning Gyeongju International Marathon in South Korea in 2:05:54, improving the previous record of 2:09:36 set by Kilkenny man Lynch last April at the D\u00fcsseldorf Marathon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Adriaan Wildschutt from South Africa took the win in New York with his 59:30 effort as just 22 seconds separated the first five finishers.
