{"id":349328,"date":"2026-03-16T17:33:10","date_gmt":"2026-03-16T17:33:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/349328\/"},"modified":"2026-03-16T17:33:10","modified_gmt":"2026-03-16T17:33:10","slug":"taoiseach-defends-media-regulation-and-says-ireland-is-bastion-of-free-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/349328\/","title":{"rendered":"Taoiseach defends media regulation and says Ireland is \u2018bastion of free speech\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Ireland makes \u201cno apologies\u201d over its media regulation, the Taoiseach has said, as he defended the need to protect children from harmful online technology.<\/p>\n<p>Among a series of hearings on the EU Digital Services Act, the US House Committee on the Judiciary was told by one witness that Irish media watchdog Coimisiun na Mean (CnaM) was \u201cground zero\u201d for a \u201clot of this regulation\u201d in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>CnaM is responsible for enforcing the Digital Services Act against a range of US technology giants which have European headquarters in Dublin.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/1773678926625_2.jpg--.jpg\" width=\"640\" alt=\"\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Members of the committee were encouraged to use Irish-US relations to put pressure on the regulator.<\/p>\n<p>Asked about the hearings on Monday, Micheal Martin said Ireland places among the top countries in indices that track freedom of speech, human rights, and freedom of assembly.<\/p>\n<p>He told reporters in Washington DC: \u201cBut where we make no apologies is the need to protect children and the need to protect young people from the harmful effects of modern online technology.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd in addition to that then, making sure that we protect democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Martin said \u201cthere will always be people with different perspectives and different analysis\u201d, but added: \u201cOne thing we\u2019re not about is shutting down free speech.
