\n\tMichael B. Jordan<\/a> has won the first Oscar of his career, taking home the lead actor statue for playing twin brothers Smoke and Stack in the supernatural thriller \u201cSinners.\u201d His victory makes him the sixth Black man to triumph in the lead actor category. <\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI stand here because of the people that came before me,\u201d Jordan said before naming those men, Sidney Poitier, Denzel Washington, Jamie Foxx, Forest Whitaker and Will Smith, as well as Halle Berry, the first and only Black woman to win for lead actress. \u201cTo be amongst those giants, those greats, amongst my ancestors, amongst my guides\u2026 Thank you\u00a0everybody in this room and everybody at home for supporting me over my career. I feel it. I know you guys want me to do well, and I want to do that because you guys bet on me. So thank you for keeping betting on me.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tThis was Jordan\u2019s first Oscar nomination. He became the late-breaking frontrunner in the category \u2014 Jordan was up against Timothee Chalamet (\u201cMarty Supreme\u201d), Leonardo DiCaprio (\u201cOne Battle After Another\u201d) Ethan Hawke (\u201cBlue Moon\u201d) and Wagner Moura (\u201cThe Secret Agent\u201d) \u2014 after scoring a key victory at the Actor Awards, formerly known as the Screen Actors Guild Awards. Prior to that ceremony, he had lost the BAFTA to Robert Aramayo of \u201cI Swear,\u201d the Golden Globe to Moura and the Critics\u2019 Choice to Chalamet.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cMan, God is good. God is good,\u201d an emotional Jordan said on stage before shouting out his family members in the audience. \u201cMomma, what\u2019s up? You know how I feel about my mother<\/a>. And my father is here. Pops, where you at? My dad came from Ghana to be here.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHe also praised filmmaker Ryan Coogler, who has directed Jordan in five movies including \u201cFruitvale Station,\u201d \u201cCreed,\u201d \u201cBlack Panther\u201d and \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cYou\u2019re an amazing, amazing person,\u201d Jordan said. \u201cI\u2019m so honored to call you a collaborator and a friend. You gave me the opportunity and space for me to be seen. I love you too, bro.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tJordan pulls off double duty in the 1930s-set \u201cSinners,\u201d playing identical twins Smoke and Stack who return home to the South after World War I and open a juke joint\u2026 only for vampires to descend on the small town. In addition to awards glory (the film was nominated for a record 16 Oscars<\/a> and won four on the big night), \u201cSinners\u201d became a box office juggernaut with $370 million globally.<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cEverybody at home who supported \u2018Sinners\u2019 and went to see the movie once, twice, three, four times\u2026 thank you,\u201d Jordan concluded. \u201cYou made this movie what it is.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Michael B.
