This 2,000-year chart explains why"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The United States emerged from World War II as the undisputed economic superpower, accounting for nearly a third of global GDP at its postwar peak. Prophetically, in 1941, Fortune founder Henry Luce dubbed this era \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/classicsofstrategy.com\/2015\/09\/16\/the-american-century-luce\/\" href=\"https:\/\/classicsofstrategy.com\/2015\/09\/16\/the-american-century-luce\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">the American century<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. spent the better part of the 20th century treating its position at the top of the economic order as something close to a birthright. \u201cAmerican exceptionalism,\u201d the idea that the country was fundamentally distinct from \u2014 and often superior to \u2014 other nations due to its unique founding principles, political institutions, historical development, and perceived moral mission in the world, dates back to the precolonial days and John Winthrop\u2019s 1630 articulation of the country as a \u201ccity upon a hill.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But in economic terms, America\u2019s exceptional share of global GDP was a very real thing from the 1860s through the 1950s, as calculated by the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bank-of-america-corp\/\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/company\/bank-of-america-corp\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">Bank of America<\/a> Institute, citing thousands of years of data from the <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/?lang=en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Groningen Growth and Development Centre<\/a>\u2018s <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/historicaldevelopment\/maddison\/?lang=en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/historicaldevelopment\/maddison\/?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Maddison Project<\/a> database, one of the most comprehensive long-run economic datasets in existence.<\/p>\n<p>This is a bit standard for the Dutch research center and its database based on the ideas of <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/historicaldevelopment\/maddison\/original-maddison?lang=en\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rug.nl\/ggdc\/historicaldevelopment\/maddison\/original-maddison?lang=en\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Angus Maddison<\/a>, a pioneering economist who tracked GDP and living standards across centuries and countries, but if you look at the blue chunk of the chart, showing the U.S. shooting up over the centuries, you\u2019d be forgiven for seeing the U.S. as quite exceptional.<\/p>\n<p>The chart also shows, however, that there\u2019s always been one other exceptional country. The chart plots the share of global GDP held by the world\u2019s major powers from the year 1 AD through 2022. What it shows is both humbling and, for anyone paying attention to the current global moment, entirely unsurprising: the world\u2019s economic center of gravity is shifting back toward where it spent most of recorded history. Back toward Asia. It\u2019s a line going down \u2014 and then, slowly, back up again.<\/p>\n<p>For roughly the first 1,800 years of the Common Era, China and India together accounted for the dominant share of global economic output. The world was, by this measure, an Asian world. The chart supports the narrative in the epic global history of capitalism written by Harvard\u2019s Sven Beckert, who <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/18\/what-is-history-of-capitalism-sven-beckert-harvard-professor-interview\/\" href=\"https:\/\/fortune.com\/2026\/01\/18\/what-is-history-of-capitalism-sven-beckert-harvard-professor-interview\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">told Fortune in January<\/a> that his eight years of studying capitalism\u2019s origins reinforced to him how \u201cweak\u201d and \u201cmarginal,\u201d yet also truly global, the dominant way of organizing economic life used to be.<\/p>\n<p>Beckert\u2019s book highlights how ancient mercantile communities of capitalists emerged in the Middle East and Asia, for instance, with the Port of Aden, in Yemen, or Cambay, in modern Gujarat, India. Goods left Aden and traded across oceans as early as 1150, and Song-dynasty China invented paper money hundreds of years before Europe did.<\/p>\n<p>When Europe Rose, and America Peaked<\/p>\n<p>The Groningen data show clearly that Europe\u2019s rise \u2014 led by the UK, Germany, Italy, France, and Spain \u2014 was a 19th-century phenomenon. The United States didn\u2019t register meaningfully on the chart until the late 1800s, and didn\u2019t achieve its peak dominance until the mid-20th century.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>That peak, visible as a bulging arc of American blue across the chart, coincided with a historically anomalous moment: a Europe devastated by two world wars, a China wracked by civil war and Maoist catastrophe, and an India still emerging from colonialism. By 2024, China accounted for roughly 19.45% of global GDP, nearly triple its share in the year 2000, <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/270439\/chinas-share-of-global-gross-domestic-product-gdp\/?srsltid=AfmBOoorjg7NYIj_otQWqgUoUDvBXNUjtuFGv0NApBg19XQoVbgstU-6\" href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/270439\/chinas-share-of-global-gross-domestic-product-gdp\/?srsltid=AfmBOoorjg7NYIj_otQWqgUoUDvBXNUjtuFGv0NApBg19XQoVbgstU-6\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">according to Statista<\/a>. By 2030, the same data projects China\u2019s share will reach 21.7%.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>China\u2019s economy <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-19\/china-s-economy-grows-5-in-2025-as-export-boom-helps-meet-goal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2026-01-19\/china-s-economy-grows-5-in-2025-as-export-boom-helps-meet-goal\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">grew 5.0% in 2025<\/a>, meeting the government\u2019s official target and seizing a record share of global demand through an export boom. Meanwhile, Beijing\u2019s newly unveiled <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20260315\/f9bc0f36ebc240299d3b2d47a558da29\/c.html\" href=\"https:\/\/english.news.cn\/20260315\/f9bc0f36ebc240299d3b2d47a558da29\/c.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">15th Five-Year Plan<\/a> (2026\u20132030) is explicitly targeting the integration of artificial intelligence into the country\u2019s manufacturing base \u2014 betting that the same factory floor dominance that powered China\u2019s rise in global trade will now power its rise in the AI economy. China wants its digital economy to account for <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/aseanplus\/aseanplus-news\/2026\/03\/08\/china-bets-on-ai-manufacturing-integration-to-narrow-digital-economy-gap-with-us#:~:text=China&#039;s%20policymakers%20want%20the%20digital,system%20anchored%20in%20advanced%20manufacturing.\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/aseanplus\/aseanplus-news\/2026\/03\/08\/china-bets-on-ai-manufacturing-integration-to-narrow-digital-economy-gap-with-us#:~:text=China&#039;s%20policymakers%20want%20the%20digital,system%20anchored%20in%20advanced%20manufacturing.\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">12.5% of GDP<\/a> by 2030, up from 10.5% in 2025. The plan includes dozens of major infrastructure and industrial projects, national 5G upgrades, and a push to build sovereign AI compute capacity.<\/p>\n<p>The exceptionalism trade falters<\/p>\n<p>For the United States, the picture is more complicated. By nominal GDP, America remains the world\u2019s largest economy \u2014 <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/worldecomag.com\/americas-economic-powerhouse-2025\/\" href=\"https:\/\/worldecomag.com\/americas-economic-powerhouse-2025\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">$30 trillion in 2024<\/a>, with financial markets valued at $79 trillion. Goldman Sachs and JPMorgan have argued that U.S. dominance is structural and durable, citing America\u2019s role as the world\u2019s most innovative, diverse, and resilient economy.<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/worldecomag.com\/americas-economic-powerhouse-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/worldecomag.com\/americas-economic-powerhouse-2025\/\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>But the markets told a different story in early 2025. As the so-called \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.alliancebernstein.com\/corporate\/en\/insights\/investment-insights\/is-us-exceptionalism-over-for-equity-investors.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.alliancebernstein.com\/corporate\/en\/insights\/investment-insights\/is-us-exceptionalism-over-for-equity-investors.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">American exceptionalism trade<\/a>\u201d began to unravel into the \u201c<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/31\/business\/sell-america-dollar-financial-markets.html\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/31\/business\/sell-america-dollar-financial-markets.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">sell America trade<\/a>,\u201d the war in Iran paradoxically boosted U.S. assets. Still, the S&amp;P 500 is down roughly 2.5% year-to-date, while the broader MSCI Global Index is up 0.8% and the dollar is up 1.76% year-to-date. \u200b<\/p>\n<p>The structural pressures are real. U.S. GDP per capita \u2014 <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD?locations=CN-US\" href=\"https:\/\/data.worldbank.org\/indicator\/NY.GDP.PCAP.CD?locations=CN-US\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">still above $85,000, compared to China\u2019s $13,000<\/a> \u2014 reflects a prosperity gap that will take decades to close. But per capita GDP is not the same as geopolitical weight. <a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/chinas-economy-grows-5-2025-buoyed-strong-exports-trumps-tariffs-rcna254754\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/world\/asia\/chinas-economy-grows-5-2025-buoyed-strong-exports-trumps-tariffs-rcna254754\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">China\u2019s economy grows at 5.2% per year<\/a>, while America expands at around 2.1%. At those trajectories, the gap in total economic mass narrows every year.<a aria-label=\"Go to https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/opinion\/world-opinion\/article\/3327584\/us-pride-its-own-exceptionalism-hastening-its-decline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.scmp.com\/opinion\/world-opinion\/article\/3327584\/us-pride-its-own-exceptionalism-hastening-its-decline\">\u200b<\/p>\n<p>What the chart really says<\/p>\n<p>The BofA Institute\u2019s report frames today\u2019s shifts as part of a familiar pattern: \u201crenewed focus on affordability, rapid advances in AI, and a broader shift from services back toward manufacturing\u201d. Those three forces \u2014 cost deflation, AI disruption, and the reindustrialization of the global economy \u2014 all tilt, at least at the margin, toward China\u2019s strengths rather than America\u2019s.\u200b<\/p>\n<p>What the chart ultimately shows is not that American exceptionalism was a myth. It\u2019s that it was a moment \u2014 a historically contingent window, opened by catastrophe elsewhere and now gradually closing as the rest of the world heals, industrializes, and competes. For 2,000 years before the American century, the world\u2019s largest economy sat somewhere along the Yangtze River.
