A woman who fled her \u201cvery wealthy\u201d husband in the United Arab Emirates<\/a>, alleging she endured severe abuse, including \u201cbrutally\u201d striking her caesarean section wound, has been granted a safety order in Dublin.<\/p>\n

Dublin District Family Court<\/a> heard on Monday the Irish woman married her UAE-based husband in recent years, where she lived for a period before leaving with their child after alleged physical abuse and \u201ccoercive control\u201d.<\/p>\n

A safety order hearing held on Monday was not attended by the husband in person or via video-link, though his counsel, Donagh McGowan, said all accusations, which are \u201csomewhat historic in nature\u201d, are fully contested by him.<\/p>\n

McGowan sought an adjournment of the hearing as child abduction proceedings are before the High Court<\/a>, alleging the woman \u201cwrongfully\u201d took the child to Ireland.<\/p>\n

He told Judge Mark O\u2019Connell that the father of the child is seeking their return to the UAE.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell opted to proceed with the safety order hearing, during which the woman alleged she endured \u201csevere physical abuse and coercive control\u201d since they married.<\/p>\n

She claimed the abuse began in the UAE, though some incidents occurred in Ireland around the time of the birth of their child.<\/p>\n

\u201cAs soon as we arrived in Ireland, he began to physically abuse me,\u201d she told the judge.<\/p>\n

\u201cI had just had a C-section,\u201d she said. \u201cHe brutally hit my C-section wound.\u201d<\/p>\n

She further alleged that her husband \u201clocked\u201d her in a room on one occasion, where she was confined \u201cwithout a phone\u201d.<\/p>\n

During the course of their marriage, she claimed he gave her bruises \u201cthat nobody could see\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe burned me with a cigar on multiple occasions and told me that he would ensure nobody would believe me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Asked where they were when her husband allegedly burned her, she replied that this happened abroad in a European country, though she maintained he has \u201csavagely hit me in Ireland\u201d.<\/p>\n

Following the birth of her child, she told the court a public health nurse \u201cwitnessed his coercive control around me\u201d while visiting them. The nurse subsequently referred concerns to Tusla<\/a>, she said, adding that the matter is \u201congoing\u201d.<\/p>\n

Noting the \u201cpower and wealth of his family\u201d, she said she has received text messages from her husband, allegedly saying if she does not \u201cbehave\u201d, she will \u201csee\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI really do need protection, judge, he has promised me and threatened me that he will kill me,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Asked what her husband does for a living, she replied that he is a business owner, though added that his father is a \u201cmultimillionaire\u201d.<\/p>\n

Reiterating that child abduction proceedings are before the High Court, McGowan raised concern that the granting of a safety order \u201cwithout evidence being tested and without all evidence being heard\u201d might be taken as a \u201cfinding of fact\u201d.<\/p>\n

However, O\u2019Connell said the woman\u2019s protection could be safeguarded \u201cwithout prejudice\u201d to his client.<\/p>\n

The judge noted McGowan\u2019s client was correctly served notice of the safety order proceedings, but \u201cisn\u2019t here to answer the allegations\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m not sympathetic to you in relation to that point. He has decided not to be here, he knows what\u2019s going on, and he has instructed you,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

O\u2019Connell granted a full safety order for a three-year period prohibiting communication with the exception of court-ordered access, which is facilitated online several days each week.<\/p>\n

The woman\u2019s solicitor, Sandra McAleer, told the judge the man is a \u201cmillionaire, possibly billionaire\u201d, but is paying \u201czero maintenance for his wife and child\u201d.<\/p>\n
