Revenue grew year after year \u2014 and none of it mattered.<\/p>\n Most founders I meet don\u2019t really understand the gap between revenue and profit<\/a>. They celebrate milestones \u2014 $100,000 months, $1 million ARR \u2014 while their actual margins are underwater.<\/p>\n When I evaluate startups, margin structure is the first thing I dig into. A packed restaurant with a line out the door can still be losing money. My father proved exactly that.<\/p>\n The bigger his restaurant grew, the faster it bled cash<\/a> \u2014 every new dollar of revenue carried the same razor-thin margin. Because there was no other option.<\/p>\n Some of those early projects paid a couple hundred dollars. The money wasn\u2019t life-changing, but the skills were.<\/p>\n That scrappiness \u2014 building with nothing, solving problems because nobody else will \u2014 is the one advantage nobody gives you credit for. I\u2019ve watched founders raise millions in venture capital before finding product-market fit and burn through every dollar within 18 months. I\u2019ve also met founders who bootstrapped<\/a> their companies to profitability on almost nothing in the bank.<\/p>\n The second group almost always outlasts the first. When you can\u2019t solve a problem by throwing money at it, you actually have to think \u2014 and that habit stays with you long after you can afford the shortcut.
