Garda\u00ed in Cork have formally opened a murder investigation following the death of a Ukrainian man (31) in a stabbing in the city on Monday evening.<\/p>\n
Officers are not releasing the results of a postmortem for operational reasons, but say that they are treating the man\u2019s death as murder.<\/p>\n
It is understood that the deceased was stabbed in the chest on Lower John Street in Cork after he left his apartment to get food.<\/p>\n
He managed to make his way back to his apartment in Camden Court on Knapps Square where he lived with his wife and young child at 8pm but collapsed soon after arriving home.<\/p>\n
His wife raised the alarm and paramedics attended, but they were unable to save him, and he was later pronounced dead at the scene.<\/p>\n
His body was removed to the morgue at Cork University Hospital where a postmortem was carried out by State Pathologist, Dr SallyAnne Collis. .<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed have set up an incident room at Watercourse Road Garda station, and a senior investigating officer has been appointed.<\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed sealed off the apartment in Camden Court where the man died and a section of Lower John Street where they believe he was fatally assaulted.<\/p>\n
They carried out a preliminary examination of both scenes, and it is expected further examinations will be done. <\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed have begun door-to-door inquiries and harvesting CCTV footage from the area.<\/p>\n
It is understood that one line of inquiry that they are looking at is that the deceased was the victim of a random attack. The backstreets in the area are known to be frequented by drug dealers and users. <\/p>\n
Garda\u00ed have not released the name of the dead man and will not do so until all next of kin are notified. A family liaison officer has been appointed.<\/p>\n
The victim\u2019s wife and child were last night taken to other accommodation to allow Garda technical experts examine their apartment.<\/p>\n
