Its office in Stamford, Connecticut, is expected to shut next year. Most of the 34 staff are expected to take up a redundancy package. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">\u201cWe have a range of supports and options in place for colleagues and we are working closely with them,\u201d the spokesman said. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The \u20ac1.2 billion US leverage acquisition finance loan book, the subject of a spike in loan losses in recent years, is expected to run down over the next three years, managed out of Dublin. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The spokesman added: \u201cAs a leading corporate and business lender, with specialist FDI and corporate lending teams, our appetite to support customers seeking to expand into the US or establish operations in Ireland is undiminished.\u201d These teams are based in Ireland. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Confirmation of the closures \u2013 50 years after Bank of Ireland first opened an office in New York \u2013 come as Taoiseach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/micheal-martin\/\">Miche\u00e1l Martin<\/a> meets US president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> and vice-president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jd-vance\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/jd-vance\/\">JD Vance<\/a> on Tuesday in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/washington-dc\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/washington-dc\/\">Washington<\/a> to mark <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-patricks-day\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/st-patricks-day\/\">St Patrick\u2019s Day<\/a>, armed with a message highlighting the two-way nature of transatlantic investment. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Irish companies plan to invest billions of dollars in the world\u2019s largest economy, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/enterprise-ireland\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/enterprise-ireland\/\">Enterprise Ireland<\/a> said last week. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" class=\"c-image audio_image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/11\/1754647931518-c07d65db-55b5-463e-ae51-976300c5837e.jpeg\"\/>\u2018Over a billion eyeballs will be on the parade\u2019: St Patrick\u2019s festival CEO Richard Tierney<\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/smurfit-westrock\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/smurfit-westrock\/\">Smurfit Westrock<\/a>, the world\u2019s largest listed packaging company which employs 32,000 staff in the US, has committed to investing $1 billion (\u20ac870 million) per annum in US over the next five years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Insulation giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kingspan\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kingspan\/\">Kingspan<\/a> plans to spend $1 billion over five years in the US \u201con rural manufacturing and brownfield site renovation\u201d, Enterprise Ireland added. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Nutrition group<a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glanbia\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/glanbia\/\"> Glanbia <\/a>is also spending approximately $100 million this year to expand its US capacity mainly in New Mexico and Ohio. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The State agency also highlighted that food and ingredients giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry-group\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/kerry-group\/\">Kerry Group<\/a>, fuel and forecourt retailer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/applegreen\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/applegreen\/\">Applegreen<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/crh\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" title=\"https:\/\/www.irishtimes.com\/tags\/crh\/\">CRH<\/a>, the largest building materials group in North America, also have significant ongoing investment plans in the US. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland set up a presence in the US in 1976 with an office in Manhattan, originally aimed at providing banking services to the Irish diaspora. It maintained a presence in the city almost continuously since then, except for a hiatus between 1997 and 2000. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The bank bought US regional lender First New Hampshire Bank in 1988 before merging the business in 1995 with Citizens Financial Group after it was hit badly by a property market slump. Citizens was owned at the time by Royal Bank of Scotland (now NatWest Group). In 1998, Bank of Ireland sold the 23.5 per cent Citizens stake it had received under the tie-up. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland\u2019s former investment management unit, Bank of Ireland Asset Management (BIAM), also once had a presence in the US to serve clients in the market. BIAM was sold to State Street in 2011. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">The US leverage finance business was set up in 2002 to specialise in arranging, underwriting and distributing debt facilities for mid-market company acquisitions. However, it had been the subject of large bad loan losses in recent years. <\/p>\n<p class=\"c-paragraph paywall \">Bank of Ireland said in its 2024 annual report that specific corporate defaults in the US acquisition finance portfolio drove a \u20ac127 million group loan loss charge that year.
