Six people have lost their lives on the roads in Ireland since garda\u00ed launched a Bank Holiday road safety operation last Thursday.<\/p>\n
In Dublin yesterday, a cyclist in his 70s was killed in a collision in Balbriggan. A man in his 30s was arrested at the scene.<\/p>\n
Separately, a man in his 20s was seriously injured after he was struck by a car in Cashel, Co Tipperary on Sunday night.<\/p>\n
Throughout this weekend\u2019s Roads Policing Operation, Garda\u00ed are conducting both statutory Mandatory Intoxicant Testing (MIT) and regular, high-visibility policing checkpoints.<\/p>\n
To date, a total of 188 people were arrested for driving under the influence of an intoxicant (alcohol and drugs).<\/p>\n
In excess of 4,250 drivers were detected for speeding offences after five days of the operation.<\/p>\n
Over 450 drivers have been detected holding a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt since this operation began.<\/p>\n
An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na is appealing to all road users to never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Drivers and all other road users are being reminded to plan ahead and organise a safe way home if socialising for St. Patrick\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n
