{"id":353075,"date":"2026-03-18T19:28:22","date_gmt":"2026-03-18T19:28:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/353075\/"},"modified":"2026-03-18T19:28:22","modified_gmt":"2026-03-18T19:28:22","slug":"louis-tomlinson-calls-one-direction-number-one-a-little-corny-and-uncool","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/353075\/","title":{"rendered":"Louis Tomlinson calls One Direction number one \u2018a little corny\u2019 and uncool"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former One Direction star Louis Tomlinson has described the boyband\u2019s UK number one single What Makes You Beautiful as \u201ca little corny\u201d and said he thought it was uncool.<\/p>\n<p>The 34-year-old went on to say that despite having issues with the song, he \u201cprobably had my whole career to thank for it\u201d and said it was still \u201cgreat\u201d just \u201call a bit Grease\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"635\" width=\"953\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/louis-tomlinson-calls-one-direction-number-one-a-little-corny-and-uncool.jpeg\" alt=\"Louis Tomlinson\"\/>Tomlinson said Story Of My Life moved the band away from the boyband sound of the time (BBC\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Asked by Scott Mills on his BBC Radio 2 Breakfast Show which One Direction song he least liked performing, Tomlinson said: \u201cWhat Makes You Beautiful, always, always, always, always.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI actually, I think two reasons on that, it\u2019s definitely our most pop and most like bubble gum pop moment, and secondly, performing that always felt so eggy, like at the time I was 18, and it wasn\u2019t the coolest thing to be in a boyband, and then we got really big, so it was cool.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou know, singing, \u2018baby, you light up my world like nobody else\u2019, honestly, like it wouldn\u2019t be out of place in a Disney film, so it felt a little corny.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Tomlinson was quick to praise One Direction\u2019s UK number two single Story Of My Life, claiming it helped the group to move away from the boyband style of time.<\/p>\n<p>He said: \u201cMy favourite One Direction song as it is on record is probably Story Of My Life, I think that was a real moment, that\u2019s not the kind of record you expect from a band like One Direction, and I think that was kind of a turning point for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo I remember feeling really proud that (it) wasn\u2019t the kind of song that you could ever dance to, there was definitely a kind of mould of boybands before then, and I think that was a song that really helped us kind of break out of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" height=\"421\" width=\"640\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/louis-tomlinson-calls-one-direction-number-one-a-little-corny-and-uncool.jpg\" alt=\"2013 MTV Video Music Awards \u2013 Press Room \u2013 New York\" data-title=\"2013 MTV Video Music Awards \u2013 Press Room \u2013 New York\" data-copyright-holder=\"PA Archive\" data-copyright-notice=\"PA Archive\/PA Images\" data-credit=\"Doug Peters\" data-usage-terms=\"\"\/>One Direction was formed on The X Factor in 2010 (Doug Peters\/PA)<\/p>\n<p>Tomlinson\u2019s solo career was launched after he and fellow One Direction members Niall Horan, Liam Payne and Harry Styles went on hiatus in 2016, almost a year after Zayn Malik left the group.<\/p>\n<p>Payne died at the age of 31 in October 2024 after falling from a hotel balcony in Argentina, and the boyband\u2019s surviving members reunited at his funeral alongside former manager Simon Cowell in November that year.<\/p>\n<p>Tomlinson released his debut solo album Walls in 2020, which reached number four on the UK albums chart, and has gone on to release Faith In The Future (2022) and released his third studio album How Did I Get Here?
