Dave Grohl<\/a> has said Taylor Hawkins<\/a>\u2018 death \u201cmade me question everything about life\u201d.<\/p>\n

The Foo Fighters<\/a> frontman spoke to MOJO<\/a> about the impact on the drummer\u2019s death on their upcoming record, \u2018Your Favourite Toy\u2019<\/a>. The album is set to arrive April 24 via Roswell Records\/Columbia Records, with Grohl previously teasing that the album\u00a0is stacked with \u201cnoisy, loud bangers\u201d<\/a>\u00a0that feel like they\u2019re from \u201cthe old days\u201d.<\/p>\n

Speaking to\u00a0MOJO, Grohl said that\u00a0\u201closing Taylor was never meant to be,\u201d adding: \u201cThat threw our world upside down and made me question everything about life, that it was so unfair. I still have a hard time making sense of it.\u201d<\/p>\n

Hawkins \u2013 who had been in the Foos since 1997 \u2013 died in 2022 aged 50<\/a> just before a scheduled show with the band in Bogot\u00e1, Colombia. Multiple drugs including opiates, antidepressants and marijuana were also found in his system<\/a> at the time of his death.<\/p>\n

Grohl went on to say that the band had \u201cno plan\u201d to record after Hawkins\u2019 death, but realised that making music was \u201csomething we needed to do\u201d. He added that music \u201chad saved us once before\u201d, referencing bandmate Kurt Cobain<\/a>\u2018s 1994 death in Nirvana<\/a> \u2013 with Grohl forming The Foos shortly afterwards.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think I was afraid of silence, afraid of having to feel,\u201d he continued, (as per Rolling Stone<\/a>). \u201cI could have used a bit more of the silence, a bit more of digging deeper. I never want to say music is a distraction, but I was definitely using it as a crutch for some broken limb.\u201d<\/p>\n

Grohl has previously opened up\u00a0about the \u201ccomplicated\u201d journey to find a new drummer following Hawkins\u2019 death.<\/a><\/p>\n

A year after Hawkins died, Josh Freese\u00a0(A Perfect Circle<\/a>,\u00a0Nine Inch Nails<\/a>) became touring drummer with the Foos \u2013 until his abrupt departure in May 2025<\/a>. Ilan Rubin has since become sticksman for the band<\/a>, having left Nine Inch Nails himself to join the Foos<\/a> while Freese returned to work with\u00a0Trent Reznor<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The Foos frontman told Zane Lowe that Hawkins was not only the band\u2019s longtime drummer, but \u201cthis incredible spirit. He was this incredible human being and he was our brother. He was our best friend.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, continuing after Taylor was really complicated, not just for us, but for any drummer that was going to come in to like, you know, fill his shoes\u2026 you know.\u201d<\/p>\n
