A woman convicted for laundering \u20ac10,000 shared her bank card to help her son, Tralee District Court heard on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Catherine McElligot (44) of Knockbrane, Lixnaw gave her bank card to \u201cpersons of nefarious backgrounds\u201d and money was physically withdrawn, Sergeant Chris Manton told the court.<\/p>\n
The court heard she made payments to a criminal organisation of \u20ac4,600 on October 17, 2024 and \u20ac400, \u20ac700 and \u20ac4,300 on October 18, 2024.<\/p>\n
Judge Waters convicted.<\/p>\n
Ms McElligot allowed the withdrawals to help her son, solicitor Pat Mann told the court.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut she knowingly gave her card to this criminal organisation,\u201d said Judge David Waters.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe people who got the benefit are walking away the whole time,\u201d said Mr Mann.<\/p>\n
Ms McElligot had told her solicitor she faced intimidation when she tried to recover the card. Now, said Mr Mann, she was \u201cthe only one in the whole group that\u2019s being prosecuted\u201d.<\/p>\n
Sergeant Manton noted garda\u00ed had a wide money laundering investigation. Laundering was portrayed to youths as a victimless crime, he said, while defendants ended up in Circuit Court facing serious criminal charges.<\/p>\n
Ms McElligot had not come to garda attention before and had been extremely co-operative, he added.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo make your bank account available to people involved in criminal activity is not victimless,\u201d said the judge.<\/p>\n
Solicitor Mr Mann noted it began \u201cinnocently in the beginning and then landed herself in bother\u201d.<\/p>\n
The case was adjourned to April 15 for sentencing.<\/p>\n
