The Government will bring in \u201cconcrete measures\u201d on Tuesday to tackle the rising cost of oil and gas<\/a>, the Tanaiste has said.<\/p>\n

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Simon Harris<\/a> said a \u201cseries of measures\u201d are planned to help with price rises triggered by the conflict in the Middle East<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Asked if people in Ireland would see \u201cconcrete measures in place\u201d on Tuesday, he replied: \u201cCorrect, yes, they will.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mr Harris said the measures would be short-term and targeted in three areas: petrol and diesel prices<\/a>; helping those most at risk of fuel poverty\u2019 and assisting \u201ccore parts\u201d of the economy like the haulage sector.<\/p>\n

He said the Government <\/a>would work over the weekend to finalise the package, adding he is in \u201cconstant contact\u201d with the Taoiseach, relevant ministers and the Department of Finance.<\/p>\n

Prices at the pumps have \u201cgone through the roof\u201d, Mr Harris said, and cause \u201ca real sense of anxiety\u201d.<\/p>\n

Addressing those most in need, he said: \u201cThere are some people in this country at greater risk of fuel poverty<\/a> than others and the fuel allowance has been a good way of assisting on that.\u201d<\/p>\n

He also said the Government will support the haulage sector because of the potential economic impact if supply chains are disrupted.<\/p>\n

The measures have to be short-term, he said, in order to \u201ctake stock, see where the economy is at, see where our European counterparts are at\u201d and to \u201chave an ability to adapt demand and revise as is needed\u201d.<\/p>\n

He added: \u201cI have yet to meet anybody in the world who can predict with any degree of certainty where this conflict is going to go, how long it\u2019s going to go on, for the depths with which it\u2019s going to reach, and therefore the full economic consequences.\u201d<\/p>\n
