{"id":358479,"date":"2026-03-21T22:49:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-21T22:49:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/358479\/"},"modified":"2026-03-21T22:49:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-21T22:49:08","slug":"cork-teenager-caught-driving-at-175km-h-fined-e250-but-avoids-disqualification","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/358479\/","title":{"rendered":"Cork teenager caught driving at 175km\/h fined \u20ac250 but avoids disqualification"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"contextmenu internal_Body1st\">A motorist who was observed driving at 175 km\/h could not explain the reason for his speed when he was pulled over by garda\u00ed, the district court has heard.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Sergeant Trish O\u2019Sullivan told Macroom District Court a Garda speed check detected a car travelling at excess speed along the Macroom bypass in Co Cork at 1.30pm on March 2, 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The car \u2014 driven by 19-year-old Kevin Neclua of Saint Brigid\u2019s Terrace, Bandon, Co Cork, \u2014 was detected driving at 175 km\/h in a 100 km\/h zone.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">When Neclua was pulled over and asked why he was driving so fast, he could not give an explanation.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">The court heard Neclua had no previous convictions, and when he was stopped his insurance, road tax and NCT documents were all in order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Neclua was initially charged with dangerous driving due to the very high speed of the offence. The charge was reduced by agreement to the lesser charge of careless driving, which does not carry a mandatory disqualification penalty on conviction.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu Body Body\">Defence solicitor, \u00c9amonn Fleming, said his client was a barber who had always worked. He said Neclua could not really explain why he was driving at such excess speed.
