There has been deep shock and sadness in Derry, following the murder of Amy Doherty.<\/p>\n
The mother-of-two was found at a property in the Summer Meadows area of the city on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
She later died in hospital.<\/p>\n
A 30-year-old man has been arrested in connection with her murder.<\/p>\n
Friends of Amy paid a series of emotional tributes online following her senseless murder.<\/p>\n
One described her as the \u201ckindest, funniest girl\u201d with \u201cthe biggest heart\u201d. They added: \u201cShe lived life like everyone should \u2013 and if the world was full of Amys, the world would be a beautiful place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Another said: \u201cI\u2019m going to be lost without you. The best mummy and best friend. I\u2019m heartbroken forever.\u201d<\/p>\n
Others recalled \u201ca kind, beautiful girl who was always smiling\u201d.<\/p>\n
One friend wrote: \u201cRest in peace to the most beautiful girl and wonderful mummy to 2 beautiful kids. I will always remember how much she made me laugh. God bless to her family now.\u201d<\/p>\n
More than 30 women have died violently in Northern Ireland since 2020.<\/p>\n
Local politicians have also expressed their shock and sadness at the murder of Ms Doherty.<\/p>\n
SDLP Foyle MP Colum Eastwood called the murder a \u201cscourge on our society\u201d as he condemned the \u201cabsolutely horrendous news\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe whole city is devastated and there\u2019s a genuine sense of shock,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy thoughts are with the woman\u2019s family and friends at this unimaginably difficult time. It\u2019s the worst news that any parent or family member could receive and they\u2019ll need the support of our whole community. I have no doubt that people will step up.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Eastwood added: \u201cThere\u2019s no doubt that this will make women and girls across Derry, and the North, feel less safe.<\/p>\n
\u201cIncidents of violence like this have a chilling effect on a community and it\u2019s an awful reminder that we have so much more to do to end this scourge on our society.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ll work with people from every background to make that happen.\u201d<\/p>\n
Meanwhile local Sinn Fein MLA Ciara Ferguson said that this \u201cunimaginable loss\u201d marked the \u201clatest act of violence against women and girls\u201d in the North.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur heartfelt thoughts are with this woman\u2019s loved ones as they face the unimaginable loss which this horrific crime has brought upon them,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cA young woman\u2019s life was taken in the latest act of violence against women and girls.<\/p>\n
\u201cI appeal to anyone with information to bring it forward to the PSNI.\u201d<\/p>\n
Detectives from the PSNI\u2019s Major Investigation Team launched a murder investigation following the death of Ms Doherty on Saturday morning.<\/p>\n
Detective Inspector Michelle Griffin from MIT said: \u201cOfficers attended a property in the Summer Meadows Mews area of the city at around 10.20 am and located an injured woman at the scene.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe was taken to hospital by our colleagues in the NIAS where she sadly died.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cA 30-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder and continues to be questioned.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cOur thoughts are with her family and loved ones, who are left trying to come to terms with this shocking loss.\u201d<\/p>\n
