Word to the wise: Do not leave your bees in the care of Maggie Gyllenhaal<\/a>. Her husband, actor and hobbyist beekeeper Peter Sarsgaard, left his bees with Gyllenhaal in Brooklyn one time only to come back and find that they had all died. This story is not going to do The Bride!\u2019s press run<\/a> any favors.<\/p>\n

On the latest episode of the Smartless podcast<\/a>, Gyllenhaal was describing her husband\u2019s many outdoorsman activities \u2014 \u201che raises bees and chickens and taps maple trees and has a beautiful garden\u201d \u2014 but before anyone started thinking of Sarsgaard as some kind of thespian Jamie Fraser, Gyllenhaal reminded us he\u2019s still only human. His Brooklyn-based hive, unfortunately, did not survive one particularly busy filming schedule.<\/p>\n

\u201cAll of his bees in Brooklyn died,\u201d Gyllenhaal told hosts Will Arnett, Jason Bateman, and Sean Hayes. \u201cAnd it was because he made a mistake. He made a beekeeping mistake. And he was so upset about it.\u201d She recalled telling her husband to \u201cgive yourself a break\u201d because he\u2019d been filming back-to-back projects in Switzerland and London and was way too busy to take care of his bees. \u201cLike, some people\u2019s only job is doing bees, you know?\u201d she added.<\/p>\n

When Bateman pressed Gyllenhaal on whether she had shirked her responsibilities \u201cin babysitting the bees\u201d while her husband was out of town, she admitted,\u00a0\u201cYeah, I think I maybe did,\u201d and then added \u201cyou\u2019re not wrong\u201d when Bateman joked that Sarsgaard had left her a note with instructions to take care of them.<\/p>\n

I can\u2019t tell you who bears ultimate responsibility for the extinction of Peter Sarsgaard\u2019s bees, only that if I ever need a celebrity pet-sitter in Brooklyn, I will be keeping this story in mind.<\/p>\n
