South Donegal man has been fined \u20ac300 and ordered to donate a further \u20ac100 to charity after pleading guilty to stealing groceries from a Killybegs supermarket.<\/p>\n
Markus Presley (74) of Carricknagore, Bruckless, was given five months to pay the \u20ac300 fine by Judge \u00c9ite\u00e1in Cunningham at Donegal District Court at Ballyshannon Courthouse.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Judge Cunningham also directed Presley to donate \u20ac100 to go to Donegal Women\u2019s Aid, at the request of staff at Supervalu in Killybegs.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He was convicted of stealing groceries valued at \u20ac62.17 from Supervalu in Killybegs, on January 13, 2023.\u00a0<\/p>\n
A separate offence of stealing groceries to the value of \u20ac37.23 on January 6, 2023, from the same shop, was taken into consideration by Judge Cunningham.<\/p>\n
Presley\u2019s solicitor, Rory O\u2019Brien, told the court his client had previously pleaded guilty at another sitting.<\/p>\n
In discussing a probation report into Presley, O\u2019Brien said: \u201cIt was very extensive. It went deep into Mr Presley\u2019s background and the positions he had in life, which were very positive. He was involved in a significant amount of coaching. He had previously been married and has a good relationship with his family as it stands.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr O\u2019Brien added Presley has had difficult issues that he has had to suffer from, including surgery on his spine.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cHe now has a very strong engagement with services provided with fresh accommodation. He is relatively insulated from the outside world, but not in a negative way.\u201d<\/p>\n
Judge Cunningham said she had taken into account what Mr O\u2019Brien had said before convicting and fining Presley.<\/p>\n
