{"id":364507,"date":"2026-03-25T14:42:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:42:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/364507\/"},"modified":"2026-03-25T14:42:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-25T14:42:07","slug":"goonhilly-earth-station-tracks-artemis-ii-mission-to-the-moon","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/364507\/","title":{"rendered":"Goonhilly Earth Station tracks Artemis II mission to the Moon"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Goonhilly Earth Station is set to play a role in NASA\u2019s historic Artemis II mission by passively tracking the Orion spacecraft as it orbits the Moon and returns to Earth.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">As the Artemis programme prepares to return humans to lunar orbit for the first time in over 50 years, Goonhilly will participate in the tracking of the Orion spacecraft as it launches through space. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">By tracking activity at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.goonhilly.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">the world\u2019s first commercial deep-space ground station<\/a>, based in Cornwall, the UK is demonstrating its capability to support deep-space missions from British soil.<\/p>\n<p>Goonhilly\u2019s leading role in NASA Artemis missions<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">In 2022, Goonhilly\u00a0Earth Station provided critical communication and tracking support for NASA\u2019s Artemis I.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">Utilising its 32-metre GHY-6 antenna and expert teams, the facility tracked the mission\u2019s uncrewed Orion spacecraft and communicated with six of the CubeSats launched on the mission. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/nasa-increases-artemis-programme-missions-to-return-humans-to-moon\/67182\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Artemis II<\/a>, tracking will focus on the crewed Orion spacecraft as it journeys beyond low Earth orbit, flying around the Moon, and returning to Earth \u2013 marking humanity\u2019s first crewed lunar mission in over half a century.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">UK Space Minister Liz Lloyd commented: \u201cFrom broadcasting the Apollo 11 Moon landing to the world in 1969, to now supporting NASA\u2019s return to the Moon with Artemis II, Goonhilly\u2019s rich heritage in space communication continues to inspire. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">\u201cIt\u2019s fantastic to see Cornwall once again at the heart of a truly historic moment in human spaceflight.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Critical work on space weather forecasting<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">In parallel, Goonhilly is working with the UK Space Agency and NASA to explore downlink solutions for near-real-time space weather measurement enabled by NASA\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/science.nasa.gov\/mission\/imap\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Interstellar Mapping and Acceleration Probe<\/a> (IMAP). <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">This new heliophysics observatory is designed to study particle acceleration and the boundary to interstellar space, while also providing solar wind and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/global-muon-detector-network-monitoring-space-terrestrial-weather\/67852\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">space weather observations<\/a> from the Sun-Earth Lagrange Point 1 (L1). <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">Matthew Cosby, CTO, Goonhilly Earth Station, explained: \u201cArtemis II marks a significant milestone in humanity\u2019s return to the Moon, and we\u2019re proud that the capabilities developed here in Cornwall are contributing to that mission. <\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 12.0pt 0cm 12.0pt 0cm;\">\u201cFrom our site, we will support tracking of the Orion spacecraft, showcasing our readiness for future crewed Artemis missions.
