One of the most dreaded conversations parents have with their kids as they grow up is explaining to them the facts of life. And while those talks usually involve the birds and the bees, for actress Elizabeth Banks<\/a> and her sons, Cape Cod\u2019s beloved whales ended up as part of the chat.<\/p>\n

The Pittsfield native<\/a> stopped by \u201cJimmy Kimmel Live!\u201d<\/a> on Tuesday night to promote her new show \u201cThe Miniature Wife,\u201d and the conversation quickly turned to awkward parenting moments, as Banks revealed that one of her teenage sons was in the audience. <\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019m like their worst nightmare mom,\u201d Banks said. \u201cI\u2019m the mom that\u2019s like, \u2018So you know about sex, right? And you know about the tampons and you know you have to buy tampons if you get a girlfriend.\u2019\u201d <\/p>\n

After Kimmel shared his own awkward story about buying tampons for his wife, he asked Banks if she\u2019s had the sex talk yet with her sons, with the actress admitting that it happened \u201cpretty early on\u201d for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI find that you have to go in stages,\u201d Banks said. \u201cLike they don\u2019t want to know really about sex. They want to know where they\u2019re from.\u201d<\/p>\n

She added that most kids are just curious about where babies and kittens come from, not necessarily all the details that go into making them, noting that animals are a great way to talk about these topics in a less awkward way.<\/p>\n

\u201cI like to remind people that you can talk about where babies come from with animals, because mammals all do it the same,\u201d Banks said.<\/p>\n

She went on to share that one of her sons asked a very technical question about sex during a trip to Cape Cod, with Banks forced to answer the question solo as they sat in their car while her husband was getting coffee at a shop.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were on Cape Cod, on vacation, and I was like, \u2018Oh wow, it\u2019s happening right now. This is it,\u2019\u201d Banks said. \u201cAnd my little one sort of sat up, like, \u2018I know what\u2019s going on. I didn\u2019t ask that question, but I\u2019d like to know the answer too.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I remember, we were talking about going on a whale watch,\u201d she added, explaining that she decided to use the animal to help explain how mammals mate. \u201cThere\u2019s a screen saver on the TV of whales like just dancing in the water and I was like, \u2018You know that screen saver? That\u2019s the whales, they\u2019re doing [it].\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

While her sons seemed to take the explanation in stride, Kimmel was curious if it ruined the movie \u201cFree Willy\u201d for them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think they felt really good about how free Willy was,\u201d Banks joked.<\/p>\n
