\n\tA new Harry. A new Hermione, Ron, Dumbledore and Snape. And a whole new Hogwarts are revealed in the first teaser trailer for HBO<\/a>\u2018s Harry Potter<\/a> TV series.<\/p>\n

\n\tBelow is the first footage from the highly anticipated series, which re-imagines J.K. Rowling\u2019s seven-novel saga into a multi-season dramatic series. The first season will tackle Rowling\u2019s first novel, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer\u2019s Stone, which was previously adapted by Warner Bros. and director Chris Columbus in 2001. The trailer introduces all the season\u2019s main characters and shows several iconic moments. <\/p>\n

\n\tOne big surprise: The trailer reveals a premiere date of Christmas, 2026 \u2014 which is earlier than the 2027 date that\u2019s been previously announced. Another surprise: The season\u2019s official title is Harry Potter and the Philosopher\u2019s Stone \u2014 not simply Harry Potter as has been widely assumed (presumably, each season the title will change to reflect to reflect the novel being adapted, with the first season going with the book\u2019s original title in the UK rather than the U.S. title). <\/p>\n

\n\tThe show introduces a young Harry (Dominic McLaughlin) and his friends Hermione Granger (Arabella Stanton) and Ron Weasley (Alastair Stout) as they attend their first year at Hogwarts. Among the adult cast, there\u2019s John Lithgow as Headmaster Albus Dumbledore, Janet McTeer as\u00a0Professor\u00a0Minerva McGonagall, Nick Frost as the half-giant Hagrid and Paapa Essiedu as the Potions Professor Severus Snape.<\/p>\n

\n\tSuccession\u00a0writer Francesca Gardiner serves as showrunner and\u00a0Game of Thrones\u00a0veteran Mark Mylod directs several episodes of the series.<\/p>\n

\n\tJB Perrette<\/a>, CEO and president of global streaming & games at Warner Bros. Discovery, has hyped HBO\u2019s Harry Potter as \u201cthe biggest streaming event in the history of HBO Max and arguably in streaming, period. It\u2019s number one, two and three in many ways.\u201d THR was invited to an exclusive screening of the trailer at an HBO press event in London in a room that was made to look like Harry\u2019s under the stairs cupboard. <\/p>\n

\n\tOne element that\u2019s recently sparked headlines is\u00a0Essiedu\u2019s casting as Snape. Having a Black actor in the role described in the books as a pale white man (and previously played by the Alan Rickman) has caused an uproar in some segments of the fandom. The actor has recently revealed he\u2019s received death threats over the role and that he\u2019s used such backlash to \u201cfuel\u201d his performance. \u00a0<\/p>\n

\n\t\u201cI\u2019ve been told, \u2018Quit or I\u2019ll murder you,\u2019\u201d Essiedu told The Times<\/a>. \u201cIt really matters. The reality is that if I look at Instagram, I will see somebody saying, \u2018I\u2019m going to come to your house and kill you.\u2019 While I hope I\u2019ll be okay, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job. Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I\u2019m playing a wizard in\u00a0Harry Potter. And I\u2019d be lying if I said it doesn\u2019t affect me emotionally. The themes that run through\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0are of love triumphing over hate \u2014 of acceptance. And that\u2019s why I\u2019m doing it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tHBO boss Casey Bloys has responded by telling reporters the show has a \u201cserious security team\u201d in place.<\/p>\n

\n\tLithgow has likewise described getting pressure to drop from the cast, for an entirely different reason \u2014 Rowling\u2019s political views. Rowling \u2014 whose Potter novels have sold more than 600 million copies worldwide \u2014 has been a controversial figure for the studio due to her views on trans rights issues. She is involved with the series as executive producer. Lithgow said he\u2019s been \u201cstung\u201d by the criticism he\u2019s received, and \u2014 similar to Essiedu \u2014 noted, her books are \u201cclearly on the side of the angels, against intolerance and bigotry.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tBloys has previously told reporters, \u201cIt\u2019s pretty clear that those are her personal, political views. She\u2019s entitled to them.\u00a0Harry Potter\u00a0is not secretly being infused with anything. And if you want to debate her, you can go on Twitter.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\tRecently, original Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe made headlines for saying he suspected McLaughlin would be far better in the iconic lead role than he was. \u201cI\u2019m sure Dominic is going to be better than me,\u201d Radcliffe said. \u201cI learned as I went. I look back on what I did now with a lot more kindness, and I find it less embarrassing now that I\u2019m older. But I was very much learning how to do it for a long time on Potter.\u201d<\/p>\n
