Gillian Anderson wants fans to have an \u201copen mind\u201d when they see the new The X-Files reboot from Sinners director Ryan Coogler.<\/p>\n

Anderson has had \u201ca few conversations\u201d with Coogler since he began developing the series for Hulu, she told journalist Dory Jackson at Awesome Con<\/a>. \u201cHe\u2019s such a cool guy, so talented,\u201d Anderson also said, \u201cand the pilot script is really good.\u201d She went on to ask that fans of the original series \u201chave an open mind and give it a chance because it is gonna be f—ing cool. It really is.\u201d<\/p>\n

The original Scully added, \u201cIt\u2019s something different. It\u2019s not\u2026 It\u2019s different, and it\u2019s special, so\u2014give it a break.\u201d<\/p>\n

Series creator Chris Carter first revealed in 2023<\/a> that Coolger, who is fresh off his Oscar win for Best Original Screenplay at this year\u2019s Oscars for Sinners, which also won Best Original Score, Best Cinematography, and Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, would be involved in a new \u201cdiverse\u201d iteration of the series.<\/p>\n

Backlash emerged right away, with peeved X-Files fans flocking to Reddit<\/a> to object to Coogler\u2019s take on the series.<\/p>\n

But with just as many, if not more, fans expressing total faith in Coogler, the series has moved full-speed ahead at Hulu.<\/p>\n

In February, the series cast Danielle Deadwyler<\/a>, known for her roles as murdered teen Emmett Till\u2019s mother in Till (2022) and the Netflix western The Harder They Fall (2021), as one half of the new FBI duo who will take on the unexplained. Casting for the Mulder role has not yet been announced.<\/p>\n

Anderson has consistently reiterated her faith in Coogler\u2019s retelling of the fan-favorite show, which starred Anderson and David Duchovny over nine seasons from 1993 to 2002, as well as a brief 2-season revival in 2016. \u201cI spoke to him,\u201d she said last May, \u201cand what I said was, \u2018If anyone were to do it, I think you are the perfect person, and best of luck.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

She also suggested that an on-screen appearance<\/a> could potentially be on the horizon, adding, \u201cAt some point, if the phone rings and it\u2019s good and it feels like the right time, then perhaps.\u201d<\/p>\n

Duchovny, for his part, told ScreenRant in 2024<\/a> that he \u201cdoesn\u2019t really have any thoughts\u201d on the upcoming series. \u201cIt seems to be a whole separate project. I wish them luck,\u201d he said at the time.<\/p>\n

In October, Coogler revealed that his connection to The X-Files is sentimental, telling Variety<\/a>, \u201cThe X-Files is one of those things with my mom,\u201d the way \u201cmy relationship with Rocky is with my dad.\u201d He added at the time, \u201cThis is a big one for me. I want to do right by her and the fans. My mom has read some of the stuff I wrote for it. She\u2019s fired up.\u201d<\/p>\n

In April, while confirming his involvement in the reboot for the first time, he told Last Podcast on the Left<\/a>, \u201cI\u2019ve been excited about that for a long time, and I\u2019m fired up to get back to it. Some of those episodes, if we do our jobs right, will be really f—ing scary. We\u2019re gonna try to make something really great, bro, and really be something for the real X-Files fans, and maybe find some new ones.\u201d<\/p>\n
