Labour Party councillor Michael \u2018Chicken\u2019 Brennan described the accident as a \u201chorrendous incident\u201d and raised concerns following several road incidents involving horses on public roads in County Tipperary. <\/p>\n
\u201cThis incident caused outrage and anger amongst a lot of people across the community, and rightly so,\u201d said Cllr Brennan on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
\u201cMy thoughts are with everyone affected, including those who witnessed the scene and the emergency services who responded so quickly. This is yet another reminder of the serious dangers posed when sulkies are used on public roads.\u201d<\/p>\n
It puts drivers, pedestrians, and the animals themselves at real risk, and this outcome shows how devastating the consequences can be, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI will be raising this issue with the relevant authorities to push for stronger enforcement and a coordinated approach that prioritises both public safety and animal welfare.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur community should not have to face incidents like this again.\u201d<\/p>\n
Tipperary County Council, An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na, the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, and child and family agency Tusla, all share some responsibility for how horses are treated on public roads, he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI am putting a motion forward to our council meeting in April. I hope, with the support of all my council colleagues, that this motion will be carried. This would be the first step to bring about an end to this activity on our roads. I would like to thank everyone who has contacted me and highlighted this horrible incident.<\/p>\n
\u201cI also will hold a peaceful march to give everyone a chance to show their support that action needs to happen now to ban sulkies on our roads,\u201d added Cllr Brennan.<\/p>\n
Cashel-based independent councillor Liam Browne added: \u201cIt\u2019s time we began a national debate and conversation about highly regulating the practice of horses and traps on public roads and a complete ban on not only organising but participating in sulky racing.<\/p>\n
