For many of us, a good hair day equals a good day, period. Our tresses play a huge role in our self-esteem and identity\u2014so when they start to thin out during perimenopause, it\u2019s terrifying. (The horrors of pulling out clumps from your brush\u2026) Thankfully, new research<\/a> has shed a bit of light on the hair-loss process and how to combat it.<\/p>\n

A review published in the journal Nutrition and Health examined 17 studies with a total of 61,332 participants\u2014most of whom were women\u2014to explore how diet and lifestyle can impact hair health. After taking a comprehensive look at the data, researchers found some intriguing takeaways:<\/p>\n

1. Limit alcohol\u2014and sugar<\/p>\n

Buzzkill alert: Both alcohol and sugar probably aren\u2019t great for your hair. (To be fair, they aren\u2019t that great<\/a> for your body in general.) The relationship between alcohol consumption and hair health is quite complex and still understudied, but this review found that more alcohol consumption was associated with increased hair loss, inhibited growth, and even going gray earlier on.<\/p>\n

Similarly, sugary drinks also seem to be linked with hair loss. While there was only one sugar-related study in the review (and it was on balding men), prior research suggests<\/a> that high-sugar drinks are associated with an increased risk of female androgenetic alopecia<\/a>, a type of hair loss more common after menopause<\/a>. <\/p>\n

2. Supplement wisely<\/p>\n

We\u2019re generally not ones to foist yet another additive onto your diet, especially without a doctor\u2019s recommendation. But in this case, it might be worth talking to your GP. Higher vitamin D<\/a> and iron levels were inversely linked to androgenetic alopecia and alopecia areata (an autoimmune disease that causes hair loss). As for the why, we\u2019re not totally sure, but experts believe that these two nutrients support natural hair follicle development (and thus might ward off shedding or balding).<\/p>\n

The study also mentions that hair loss has been linked<\/a> to vitamin A: that too much is bad and too little is bad. But given that that\u2019s a tricky needle for your system to thread, there\u2019s really not enough information here on whether you should be loading up on carrot sticks for an added dose of vitamin A.
<\/p>\n

3. Balance out your diet (and your life)<\/p>\n

The review also called out some other aspects of nutrition that could be helpful for healthy, full hair. Though these findings were less conclusive than the rest, here are the top-line points: Protein<\/a> may help with hair root health, while soy and cruciferous vegetables<\/a> (think broccoli and Brussels sprouts) may help with hair loss itself as well as other menopause symptoms. <\/p>\n

Stress is also a huge factor in hair health, particularly when it comes to managing alopecia areata.
