{"id":368853,"date":"2026-03-27T23:18:12","date_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:18:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/368853\/"},"modified":"2026-03-27T23:18:12","modified_gmt":"2026-03-27T23:18:12","slug":"google-must-be-on-a-different-planet-quest-to-correct-spelling-of-county-limerick-townland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/368853\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Google must be on a different planet&#8217;: Quest to correct spelling of County Limerick townland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A COUNTY Limerick residents association has called on Google to correct the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/section\/230\/community\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">spelling<\/a> of their townland, insisting the correct form is Rich Hill \u2014 not Richill or Richhill, as currently listed on the global mapping platform.<\/p>\n<p>The campaign, led by the Rich Hill Residents Association and supported by Limerick City &amp; County Council, highlights the long-standing historical use of the name, which dates back to 1738. Residents argue that Google\u2019s incorrect listing has caused confusion and, in some cases, misdirected mail to Co Armagh instead of Rich Hill, Lisnagry.<\/p>\n<p>In an email to Google, resident James Ryan described repeated unsuccessful attempts to correct the error. \u201cWe wrote to you in Dublin both in 2024 and 2025 but zero response from you,\u201d he said. \u201cThis final email to you is a courtesy prior to contacting Senior Management and the CEO of Google regarding our concerns. We should not have to do this.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan, 81, who has lived in Rich Hill since 1981, explained that the incorrect spelling has practical consequences. \u201cIf no postcode is used, we are left wondering if important medical appointments are gone to Richill, Co Armagh,\u201d he said. \u201cEven if it\u2019s only one letter a month, it could well be the critical one.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/health\/2041903\/you-re-dealing-with-family-at-chaotic-scenes-meet-the-limerick-woman-saving-lives.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">&#8216;You&#8217;re dealing with family at chaotic scenes&#8217; &#8211; Meet the Limerick woman saving lives<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan also recalled a conversation with an auctioneer in the 1980s about estate names, noting that they said: \u201cYou could call it Woodhaven or something else, but you\u2019d still have to put in Rich Hill, as it\u2019s the name of the townland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The association argues that Google\u2019s error has been amplified by other agencies, who often cite Google as the source for the spelling. \u201cGoogle somehow got the correct spelling wrong and so now because of Google all these agencies quote Google when questioned about how the incorrect spelling originated.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ryan expressed frustration over the lack of response. \u201cAfter 40-plus years, we\u2019ve learnt to put up with it. Still, it\u2019s not right.
