On Portland Row in Dublin<\/a>\u2019s inner city, bunting, flags and posters hang from the houses where there is \u201cso much pride\u201d in footballer Troy Parrott<\/a> despite Ireland\u2019s defeat to the Czech Republic<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n

The Irish team lost on penalties after the game ended in a 2-2 draw , bringing the country\u2019s dream of reaching the World Cup to an end.<\/p>\n

Local man Liam Gifford described watching the penalty shoot-out as \u201cheartbreaking\u201d.<\/p>\n

Owner of the The Bridge Tavern pub, Gifford has known the Parrott family all his life \u2212 the player\u2019s grandmother Josie had a favourite seat in the pub.<\/p>\n

On Thursday night, he said there was a \u201cnice\u201d crowd in the pub to watch the game, although spectators were, of course, left disappointed by the result.<\/p>\n

Despite that, he said the area has \u201cso much pride\u201d in Parrott, just as there is with other local heroes \u2212 boxers Kellie Harrington<\/a> and Pierce O\u2019Leary, footballer Wes Hoolahan and actor Barry Keoghan<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201c[It\u2019s] fabulous to see him doing so well … it\u2019s a great area, great people,\u201d he said, adding \u201cit\u2019s great motivation for all of them. Behind one there is 10 more coming up.\u201d<\/p>\n

Joe Dowling watched the game from his \u201cnice and peaceful\u201d home. \u201cI thought it was a great first half they played, they had everything going for them. In the second half, they sort of fell a bit down.\u201d<\/p>\n

The retiree, who lives on Killarney Street, said he was \u201ca bit disappointed. But I have to say they reached the peak last night with this community, with Troy living around the corner. All the people of the community are all up for it, we\u2019ll go again.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe won\u2019t give up, they\u2019re a young team. They done their best, you can\u2019t do any more than your best.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said Parrott is \u201cloved\u201d in the area. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s great to see … people doing something for their community and he\u2019s lifted it, Kellie [Harrington] has lifted it, everyone has lifted it and that\u2019s the way it is in this community.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019re all community people and love the community, born and reared in it. It\u2019s good for the kids growing up.\u201d <\/p>\n

Louise Gannon, who works behind the deli counter of the local Spar, said she remembered Parrott coming into the shop for his school lunch.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt would have been great, a big lift for the country but next time, they\u2019re only young. He still has his whole career ahead of him,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

Another local, Gerard Mitchell, watched the game in the Hogan Stand pub. <\/p>\n

When they went 2-0 up \u201ceveryone thought it was wrapped up but it\u2019s never wrapped up\u201d, he said. <\/p>\n

\u201cI know a lot of people turned up for work today but they wouldn\u2019t have turned up if we\u2019d have won that game. There would have been a lot of sick notes going around,\u201d he joked.<\/p>\n

\u201c[The pride] doesn\u2019t leave us … we take the good but we take the bad.\u201d <\/p>\n

Lacey Richardson, who watched the game in a pub, said \u201cthe first half was good, we kind of fell off in the second half and sure it went to extra time and the \u2018penos\u2019 just ended it\u201d. <\/p>\n

\u201cIt was a bad way to go out, I actually thought they had it but it was a good game.<\/p>\n
