Two brothers, one described as \u201cnot the Napoleon of crime\u201d, have been remanded in custody after garda\u00ed uncovered almost \u20ac1.5m worth of cannabis at a \u201csafehouse\u201d in Tallaght, Dublin.<\/p>\n
Mark Courtney (58) of Grace O\u2019Malley Drive, Howth, Dublin and his sibling Derek Courtney (53) were arrested after a Dublin Crime Response Team (DCRT) Garda raid on Thursday.<\/p>\n
They have been charged with possessing cannabis and having it for sale or supply on March 26th at Derek Courtney\u2019s home in St Aongus Green, in Tallaght.<\/p>\n
The elder brother did not apply for bail and was remanded in custody with a recommendation that he receive medical treatment. <\/p>\n
He made no reply to the charge.<\/p>\n
Derek Courtney was remanded in custody with consent to bail of \u20ac25,000. <\/p>\n
DCRT Garda Tom Doyle stated that Derek Courtney was paid and trusted to keep the drugs for a significant drug-trafficking organisation.<\/p>\n
The court heard that when garda\u00ed entered, the accused told them, \u201cI wasn\u2019t in trouble five minutes ago, but I am now\u201d.<\/p>\n
The contested bail hearing was told the value of the drugs was \u20ac1.46m and officers recovered 70kg of cannabis herb, 10kg of cannabis resin, some of it vacuum packed, and weighing scales. <\/p>\n
Doyle alleged it was recovered from Derek Courtney\u2019s bedroom and two spare rooms in his house.<\/p>\n
The court heard he was currently on disability leave, employed by Dublin City Council and intended to return to work. <\/p>\n
His barrister, Kevin McCrave, pleaded for bail, telling the court his client was \u201cnot the Napoleon of crime\u201d and he did not have houses in Spain. He said he was just a single man who lived most of his life at the same address.<\/p>\n
Counsel stressed that his client had the presumption of innocence and evidence given by the garda would be tested at a trial.<\/p>\n
Judge John Hughes set his bail at \u20ac10,000 and ordered him to lodge half that amount. He directed that a \u20ac15,000 independent surety must be approved before he can be released under conditions. <\/p>\n
