The more direct path, a paved road, wends its way from the front entry gates to the right of the venue. A second route cuts through the middle of the property, offering a slower climb up to the stage and its wide views of the Pacific Ocean. Those who don\u2019t mind the few extra minutes can take this scenic way \u2014 the venue\u2019s outdoor lobby, of sorts \u2014 and bask in a wooded glen overflowing with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/centralcoast\/article\/socialite-garden-passion-project-calif-treasure-21027356.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">native plants<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-channels-pixel.ex.co\/events\/0012000001fxZm9AAE?integrationType=DEFAULT&amp;template=design%2Farticle%2Fplatypus_two_column.tpl\" alt=\"\" class=\"x1px y1px vh abs\" aria-hidden=\"true\" width=\"1\" height=\"1\"\/><\/p>\n<p>Underneath these leafy bushes and tree canopies, an unusual sight then materializes: a prominent bronze sculpture depicting the right hand of the late Jerry Garcia, the frontman of the Grateful Dead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cast in bronze and weighing 75 pounds, the foot-and-a-half-long sculpture both memorializes the guitar legend and anchors the naturalistic space itself, officially dubbed the Jerry Garcia Glen. But Garcia barely spent time here. He <a href=\"https:\/\/sbbowl.com\/concerts\/jerry-garcia-1974-10-13\/\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">only played the Bowl once<\/a>, in October 1974, in a solo showing without the Dead.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Local Deadhead Scott Brittingham, who commissioned the sculpture as part of his family foundation\u2019s gift to the Bowl, says that Garcia \u2014 and the Grateful Dead \u2014 weren\u2019t known to have especially strong ties to Santa Barbara, either.<\/p>\n<p>Make SFGATE a preferred source so your search results prioritize writing by actual people, not AI.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/preferences\/source?q=sfgate.com\" data-link=\"native\" role=\"button\" aria-label=\"Add Preferred Source\" class=\"td300 cp f aic jcc disabled:cd wsn px24 y40px px16 py8 buttonSm fs13 xs:fs16 lg:buttonLg bg-primaryAccessible hover:o80 c-white disabled:bg-gray300 disabled:c-gray600 border bn tac br48px\"><\/p>\n<p>Add Preferred Source<\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is no real Santa Barbara story that I\u2019ve ever heard of,\u201d he tells\u00a0SFGATE. \u201cThey obviously had to drive back up the coast to get to San Francisco and go through Santa Barbara,\u201d he adds. \u201cBut I wish I had a story where they like to go to Super-Rica or to some cool spot,\u201d referencing the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfgate.com\/centralcoast\/article\/julia-child-taqueria-santa-barbara-18132583.php\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">beloved taqueria<\/a> that counted among Julia Child\u2019s favorite places.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>The Dead played the Ventura County Fairgrounds down the way from 1982 to 1987, and some of its members\u2019 groups, like Phil Lesh and Friends and Bob Weir, performed at the Bowl numerous times. Yet that\u2019s about as close as a relationship that Garcia himself had with performing in Santa Barbara. Meaning much of the sculpture\u2019s existence comes down to one man\u2019s fascination with Garcia:\u00a0Brittingham himself.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Back in the \u201990s, the Santa Barbara Bowl Foundation took over the venue\u2019s lease from the county, which owns the property on which the amphitheater stands. When Brittingham learned that the Bowl\u2019s wooded glen had the potential for a naming rights gift, he jumped at the chance to memorialize his favorite musician. \u201cThe fact that [Garcia] played there at least once was all I needed to know,\u201d Brittingham says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Brittingham had a vision for what he wanted: A sculpture of Garcia\u2019s hand, with most of his missing middle finger. The accident led Garcia to develop a distinctive playing technique. In a 1978 interview with\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.guitarplayer.com\/players\/jerry-garcia-october-1978\" data-link=\"native\" class=\"\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Guitar Player magazine<\/a>, Garcia said that he held his guitar pick in his right hand more like a pencil\u00a0\u2014 what he called \u201cthe scalpel technique\u201d\u00a0\u2014 using his thumb and index finger for the movement. \u201cIt\u2019s his gift that his hand was like that,\u201d Brittingham says.<\/p>\n<p>Around 2008, Brittingham reached out to several sculptors, asking them to give him an idea for a \u201clarger than life\u201d bronze sculpture of Garcia\u2019s hand. That included a view of the familiar curve of his middle finger, he tells SFGATE. It took White about four months to create the sculpture, first building it out of clay, then delivering it to the foundry, where it transformed into a bronze sculpture.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"uiTextSmall f aic jcc\">Article continues below this ad<\/p>\n<p>Before dedicating the piece in 2010, Brittingham reached out to Garcia\u2019s daughters for insights on what to put on the plaque next to the sculpture. \u201cWe want you to put on the plaque\u00a0\u2014 because it\u2019s true, because it was Jerry, our dad\u00a0\u2014 he was a Cosmic Explorer,\u201d Brittingham says they told him.
