(Image: WXCharts.com)

Any hopes of a dry and sunny Easter have all but disappeared with one Ireland weather expert saying “it’s not looking good”.

There were suggestions that Easter weekend would bring with it settled conditions but according to recently published weather maps, it could all change on Good Friday (April 3, 2026).

The ominous forecast has been echoed by Met Eireann who said while there is still a degree of uncertainty, wet and windy weather is on the horizon.

In fact, Met Eireann went one step further and said it cannot rule out “wintry precipitation”.

The good news however is that the weather will be relatively pleasant in the run-up to Easter weekend but Met Eireann believes a “mobile Atlantic regime” will begin to introduce itself from midweek onwards.

Sharing a graphic detailing low pressure systems for the end of the month and the beginning of April, Alan O’Reilly of Carlow Weather told his more than 156,000 followers on X: “The outlook has taken a turn and it’s not great looking”.

Met Eireann National Outlook:

Summary: A lot of dry weather to begin with high pressure ruling and relatively mild. However, it’ll become more changeable from midweek and more unsettled later in the week and over the weekend, with a mobile Atlantic regime taking over and low pressure likely to be dominant, with spells of wet and windy weather at times. We’ll see a downward trend in temperatures too after midweek.

Monday Night: A cloudy night with a little patchy light rain and drizzle along with some mist and hill fog. Relatively mild, with temperatures falling no lower than 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate westerly breezes.

Tuesday: Tuesday will be a mostly dry day with just a few spots of drizzle or a few light showers around. While there’ll be a good deal of cloud generally, some bright or sunny spells will develop, the best of these further to the east. Mild with highest temperatures of 12 to 15 degrees in mostly moderate west to southwest winds.

Tuesday night: A few clear spells for a time, especially further east, but becoming mostly cloudy. It’ll be mainly dry for much of the night apart from the odd spot of drizzle, however towards morning more persistent rain and drizzle will start to move into coastal parts of the northwest and west. Lowest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees in light to moderate south-west winds, becoming a little fresher in northwestern coastal parts.

Wednesday: A cloudy day and while it’ll be dry at first in many areas, scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle will slowly spread from the northwest through the day. A clearance to mostly dry conditions with some bright or sunny spells will follow from the northwest through the afternoon and evening, though the rain and cloud is likely to linger over Munster and south Leinster. Generally mild for a time with highest temperatures of 11 to 15 degrees, though becoming cooler from the north later. Winds will be mostly moderate, occasionally fresh, southwesterly, veering north to north-west as the rain clears.

Wednesday night: There’s the chance that cloud and rain may linger in some southern and southwestren parts on Wednesday night, while it’s likely that it’ll be drier with some clear spells further north. It’s likely to be rather cold further north, with lowest temperatures of 1 to 3 degrees and perhaps a touch of frost, but milder further south under the cloudier skies, with lowest temperatures more like 5 to 8 degrees.

Thursday: While there’s uncertainty in the detail and timing, it’s likely that rain will become fairly widespread for a time on Thursday, but clearing to brighter conditions with sunshine and some scattered showers. Temperatures will be down a bit on previous days, with highest values of between 7 and 12 degrees. Breezy with moderate to fresh southeast winds veering westerly.

Good Friday and Easter Weekend: While there’s uncertainty in the detail at this lead time, It looks like we’ll be in mobile Atlantic regime, with areas of low pressure bringing in wet and windy weather at times, but with some brighter conditions in between the spells of rain, with sunshine and a scattering of showers. Temperatures will fluctuate, with milder air moving in at times with wetter spells, but with cooler or colder calmer interludes and the chance of frost and ice. A little bit of wintry precipitation can’t be ruled out.

Met Eireann Extended Range Forecast:

Week 1 – Monday 30th March to Sunday 05th April

High pressure will likely dominate, extending from the southwest, bringing largely dry and settled conditions. There will be some unsettled weather in the far north-west, but this will be the exception. Mean air temperatures will likely be a degree or so above average for this time of year.

Week 2 – Monday 06th April to Sunday 12th April

High pressure looks to remain in charge but weakened slightly. Mean air temperatures are signalled to be around normal or slightly above for this week, while there is an indication that rainfall amounts will be slightly above average in the west with eastern parts remaining closer to average.

Week 3 – Monday 13th April to Sunday 19th April

Current indications show neither high nor low pressure dominating, meaning conditions are likely to be more changeable. Mean air temperatures are signalled to be above average and precipitation amounts below normal overall.

Week 4 – Monday 20th April to Sunday 26th April

There is a slight signal for more unsettled conditions overall, with an indication for slightly higher than average rainfall amounts, while mean air temperatures are signalled to be close to normal.

Want to see more of the stories you love from the Irish Mirror? Making us your preferred source on Google means you’ll get more of our exclusives, top stories and must-read content straight away.
