He is seen by many as a quintessential English character immortalised by Colin Firth<\/a> on the screen.<\/p>\n

But actor Jack Lowden, who grew up in the Borders, has revealed he tried to convince the makers of the new version of Pride and Prejudice to let him play Mr Darcy as a Scotsman.<\/p>\n

The Slow Horses star had wanted to use his own accent in the role of the romantic hero from Jane Austen\u2019s novel in the upcoming Netflix<\/a> adaptation.<\/p>\n

Lowden, 35, said he thought the move could have been possible because the book does not specify the character\u2019s accent or appearance.<\/p>\n

But the production team refused.<\/p>\n

In an interview with Hunger magazine, Lowden said: \u2018Honestly, with every single role I\u2019m lucky enough to be given, my first question is, \u201cCan I play him Scottish?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u2018That hasn\u2019t happened yet. Believe me, I tried. Hopefully one day.<\/p>\n

\u2018But, in terms of playing Mr Darcy, what\u2019s been really fascinating is learning how much the character comes from the nineties version with Colin Firth.<\/p>\n

\u2018The original Jane Austen version is quite ambiguous actually. And that\u2019s a question I asked them – \u201cIs that okay?\u201d And they said, \u201cYeah, it\u2019s never really mentioned, so it doesn\u2019t matter\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u2018Maybe on certain days when I\u2019m not really concentrating, maybe my accent will come out Scottish.\u2019<\/p>\n

Lowden studied acting at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow.<\/p>\n

The new dad is currently filming the six-part Pride and Prejudice series which also stars Emma Corrin as Elizabeth Bennet.<\/p>\n

Lowden also said he wants to move behind the camera as a director and producer rather than take on more acting jobs.<\/p>\n

Last year he produced the Orkney-based drama The Outrun, which starred his wife Saoirse Ronan in the lead role.<\/p>\n

He said: \u2018It\u2019s all I want to do, really, move into that side of things – specifically directing.<\/p>\n

\u2018That experience with The Outrun really was a massive eye-opening moment to me. It\u2019s the most alive and useful I\u2019ve felt in any of my work.\u2019<\/p>\n
