{"id":373401,"date":"2026-03-30T18:41:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T18:41:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373401\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T18:41:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T18:41:08","slug":"redress-scheme-for-car-loans-set-to-cost-bank-of-ireland-less-than-expected","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373401\/","title":{"rendered":"Redress scheme for car loans set to cost Bank of Ireland less than expected"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has \u201cmodestly\u201d tightened the conditions for borrowers to receive compensation, which means 12.1 million loans are eligible, down from 14.2 million last year, according to a statement it issued setting out the final shape of the compensation plan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Lenders should now expect to pay \u00a37.5bn in compensation, down from \u00a38.2bn previously, and the estimated costs of running the redress scheme are now 40pc lower, the FCA said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">This means the programme is set to cost the industry \u00a39.1bn overall, down from \u00a311bn in the previous version.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">That approach will be welcomed by the firms affected, which include Bank of Ireland, as well as Lloyds, plus car firms with lending operations such as Mercedes-Benz. The industry had argued that the regulator\u2019s proposals were too strict and failed to take proper account of a ruling last year by the UK Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">\u201cIt\u2019s not as bad as it could\u2019ve been if they\u2019d stuck their heels in,\u201d said Gary Greenwood, an analyst at Shore Capital Group.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The programme covers car-loan agreements taken out between 2007 and 2024.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Lloyds has taken the largest known provision, at almost \u00a32bn. Mercedes-Benz, Bank of Ireland and Barclays are among the firms to have taken nine-figure charges.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">In its last comment on the car-finance issue, made last October, Bank of Ireland said it had made a provision of \u00a3143m (\u20ac167m) the previous June based on probability weighted scenarios that captured the then best estimate of the compensation to be paid.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Based on the FCA\u2019s proposals last autumn, Bank of Ireland said it estimated the provision could increase to about \u00a3350m. This was due to the increased likelihood of a higher number of cases, as well as the construction of the proposed redress methodology and the customer engagement approach.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Bank of Ireland said it was committed to achieving a fair outcome for customers and ensuring that appropriate redress is provided where loss had occurred. \u201cHowever, the group does not believe that the FCA\u2019s proposed redress methodology reflects the actual loss to customers or achieves a proportionate outcome,\u201d it added, stressing that it would engage with the UK\u2019s financial watchdog on the issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">The bank did not offer a further comment on the FCA\u2019s revised approach on Monday, but an update is expected on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"indo-ebe0ecc6_root indo-ebe0ecc6_paragraph indo-300db776_none indo-91174671_primary indo-1d70522a_marginbottom5 indo-1d70522a_margintop0 indo-b48c4984_inherit\" style=\"color:var(--color-primary-80)\">Under the new version of the scheme, the FCA said the average redress payment will rise slightly to \u00a3829 per customer, up from about \u00a3700 in the original plan.
