They are creating \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/08\/13\/climate\/us-cities-heating-up-fastest-dg\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">heat islands<\/a>,\u201d warming the land around them by up to 16 degrees Fahrenheit, and making life hotter for more than 340 million people.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd5v4uw00013b6qy6dhjlt8@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There are still big gaps in our understanding of the impacts of data centers, even as they boom in number, said Andrea Marinoni, associate professor with the Earth Observation group at the University of Cambridge, and an author of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/publication\/403073048_The_data_heat_island_effect_quantifying_the_impact_of_AI_data_centers_in_a_warming_world\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">study<\/a>, which has not yet been peer-reviewed.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd9be5l00093b6qs6yv3aig@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Marinoni and his colleagues decided to dig into one under-researched impact: the heat they release through their energy-intensive processes, including computation and powering cooling systems.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd9cjub000c3b6qcunn3041@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            To do this, they looked at temperature data over the last 20 years from remote sensors and mapped it against the locations of AI \u201chyperscalers\u201d \u2014 vast data centers that house thousands of servers and can stretch over a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ibm.com\/think\/topics\/hyperscale-data-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">million square feet<\/a>, which have mostly been built within the last decade.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd5v4uw00033b6q8219fdyx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They focused on more than 6,000 data centers located away from highly dense urban areas, as surface temperatures around these were less likely to have been affected by other factors, such as manufacturing or the heating of homes. The researchers also filtered out seasonal impacts, global warming trends and other influences.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd5v4uw00043b6qq8u92bol@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            They found surface temperatures increased by an average of 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit after a data center started operations. In extreme cases, nearby temperatures reached up to 16.4 degrees Fahrenheit.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd5v4uw00053b6qrw6vhl4v@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            These increases were consistent across the globe, the researchers found. In Mexico\u2019s Bajio region, for example, which has become a data center hub, the study found unexplained temperature rises of around 3.6 degrees over the last 20 years. A similar situation was seen in Aragon, Spain, a European center for hyperscale AI data centers, which recorded a temperature increase of 3.6 degrees which was not replicated in neighboring provinces.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmnd5v4uw00063b6qtjh5yifd@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Strikingly, the impacts weren\u2019t limited to a data center\u2019s immediate surroundings;
