Competition\u00a0sought bold ideas to better understand how dietary interventions could influence disease onset and symptom management.<\/p>\n
The National Institutes of Health (NIH)\u00a0today\u00a0has chosen 15\u00a0scientific teams from across the nation\u00a0as\u00a0cash prize\u00a0winners\u00a0for their submissions to\u00a0a national crowdsourcing\u00a0challenge<\/a>\u00a0designed to generate innovative ideas that integrate diet and nutrition into autoimmune disease research.\u00a0Winning submissions investigated the effectiveness of dietary interventions; microbiome, immune system and multi-omic approaches; personalized and data-driven predictive nutrition; and community and patient-center research frameworks.\u00a0<\/p>\n Autoimmune diseases affect more than 8% of the U.S. population, impacting between 23 and 50 million Americans.\u00a0Despite\u00a0the\u00a0prevalence and significant economic burden\u00a0of autoimmune diseases, the role of diet and nutrition in\u00a0this area\u00a0remains\u00a0largely\u00a0underexplored.\u00a0NIH invited researchers, clinicians, patients, caregivers, advocacy groups, and interdisciplinary teams\u00a0to submit\u00a0feasible,\u00a0scalable approaches to better understand how dietary interventions may influence autoimmune disease onset, progression, flares, and symptom management.\u00a0<\/p>\n The\u00a0challenge, known as\u00a0the\u00a0Nutrition for\u00a0Our\u00a0Immune System Health\u00a0(NOURISH): Autoimmunity Challenge\u00a0and led by NIH\u2019s Office of Autoimmune Disease Research,\u00a0yielded many highly competitive submissions, and resulted in 15\u00a0prize\u00a0awards, totaling\u00a0$10,000\u00a0to each team. The winners showed\u00a0thoughtful planning and designs that, with further development, could result in innovative solutions to benefit Americans affected by autoimmune diseases. These approaches integrate patient-reported outcomes, digital health tools, and predictive modeling to improve disease management and enhance the lived experience of people living with autoimmune diseases.
\n\tCommunity Voice, Landscape Assessment, and Patient-Centered Frameworks
Submissions in this theme proposed patient-centered frameworks that bring lived experience to the forefront of the research paradigm. These projects emphasize community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration, including the involvement of people living with autoimmune diseases, caregivers, clinicians, and advocacy organizations to help shape research priorities, outcomes, and approaches that are meaningful to patients.<\/p>\n
