{"id":373615,"date":"2026-03-30T21:43:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T21:43:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373615\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T21:43:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T21:43:08","slug":"inquest-hears-boy-12-who-it-is-suspected-was-killed-by-father-had-died-as-a-result-of-asphyxiation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373615\/","title":{"rendered":"Inquest hears boy, 12, who it is suspected was killed by father had died as a result of asphyxiation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A young boy suspected of being killed by his father in Dublin earlier this year in a murder-suicide case died as a result of asphyxiation, an inquest has heard.<\/p>\n<p>The body of Ois\u00edn Reddin (aged 12) was found in the bedroom of a house at Lindisfarne Grove, Clondalkin, on January 8 where he lived with his father and extended family.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Concern about his welfare was raised following the discovery of the body of his father, Wayne O\u2019Reilly (aged 48) a short time earlier at a property in Cherry Orchard Drive, Ballyfermot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The boy\u2019s mother, Pamela Reddin, gave evidence at the opening of an inquest into her son\u2019s death at Dublin District Coroner\u2019s Court of formally identifying his body to garda\u00ed at Dublin City Mortuary in Whitehall.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Garda Lisa Sexton told the brief hearing on Monday that she had brought Ms Reddin and her mother, Anne Reddin, to the mortuary for the formal identification process on the day after the discovery of his body.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">The coroner, Clare Keane, said the results of a postmortem showed the cause of the boy\u2019s death was \u201cexternal obstruction of the airway.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Inspector Paul Mayock applied for an adjournment of the inquest under Section 25 (1) of the Coroners Act on the basis that the circumstances of Ois\u00edn\u2019s death are still under investigation. He also sought a copy of the postmortem report from the coroner.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Dr Keane granted the applications and adjourned the inquest to September 29 for a further update on the Garda investigation. The coroner also offered her condolences to Ms Reddin and the victim\u2019s grandmother who attended the hearing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">\u201cI am so sorry for your loss,\u201d said Dr Keane.<\/p>\n<p class=\"contextmenu caption\">Case background<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Concern for Ois\u00edn\u2019s welfare arose after his father\u2019s body was found in the back garden of the home of his ex-partner in Ballyfermot with suspected self-inflicted injuries on January 8.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It is understood that O\u2019Reilly, who suffered mental health issues, was facing a custody battle for Ois\u00edn in the courts later that month.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It subsequently emerged that Ois\u00edn \u2014 who was a 5th class pupil at Talbot Senior National School in Clondalkin \u2014 and his family were known to Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, although the boy was not in the care of the State.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Concerns about the welfare of the boy had also been raised last October when he and his father were reported missing.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">However, the pair, who were the subject of a missing persons alert issued by An Garda S\u00edoch\u00e1na at the time, were located two days later at a hotel in Limerick by garda\u00ed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">It is believed that O\u2019Reilly, who had been arrested a number of times under the Mental Health Act, had previously threatened via text messages to harm both himself and his son, although no formal complaints or charges arose from such incidents.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">Following the discovery of their whereabouts after being reported missing last October, Tusla oversaw the implementation of a safety plan which allowed Ois\u00edn to live in a house with his father and other relatives who were responsible for his supervision.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\">An independent review of the circumstances of Ois\u00edn\u2019s death and arrangements for his welfare is being carried out by the National Review Panel which examines deaths and serious incidents involving children known to Tusla.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"A young boy suspected of being killed by his father in Dublin earlier this year in a murder-suicide&hellip;\n","protected":false},"author":2,"featured_media":373616,"comment_status":"","ping_status":"","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3],"tags":[54,42,410,43,40,38,41,39],"class_list":{"0":"post-373615","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","5":"has-post-thumbnail","7":"category-headlines","8":"tag-courts","9":"tag-headlines","10":"tag-mental-health","11":"tag-news","12":"tag-top-news","13":"tag-top-stories","14":"tag-topnews","15":"tag-topstories"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/373615","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/2"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=373615"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/373615\/revisions"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/373616"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=373615"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=373615"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=373615"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
