{"id":373706,"date":"2026-03-30T22:54:08","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T22:54:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373706\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T22:54:08","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T22:54:08","slug":"human-remains-discovered-at-field-of-blood-in-rural-limerick","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/373706\/","title":{"rendered":"Human remains discovered at &#8216;field of blood&#8217; in rural Limerick"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Human remains have been uncovered in \u201ca field of blood\u201d at an archaeological dig in Croagh, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The skeletons largely date back to the sixth and seventh century, and were uncovered as part of the Foynes to Limerick Road Project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The fieldwork prioritised the Adare Bypass section of the road project in anticipation of the Ryder Cup.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>READ MORE:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.limerickleader.ie\/news\/home\/2050688\/limerick-fire-and-rescue-services-access-to-emergency-restricted-by-parked-cars.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">Limerick Fire and Rescue Service\u2019s access to emergency restricted by parked cars<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Excavation Director Se\u00e1n Tiffin, who led the excavations at Croagh, said that \u201ceven before we had fully exposed the site here, we were told that the field was known as \u2018the field of blood\u2019, and so we were on high alert even before the first human bones were encountered\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Archaeologists working on the dig at Croagh have said that dozens of burials laid out in a Christian style have been discovered.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>One burial revealed a woman and child lying together with their skulls inclined towards each other.
