{"id":374464,"date":"2026-03-31T10:00:07","date_gmt":"2026-03-31T10:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/374464\/"},"modified":"2026-03-31T10:00:07","modified_gmt":"2026-03-31T10:00:07","slug":"scottish-companies-pioneer-satellite-communications-with-spacex-launch","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.newsbeep.com\/ie\/374464\/","title":{"rendered":"Scottish companies pioneer satellite communications with SpaceX launch"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Three new satellites built in Scotland have launched aboard SpaceX\u2019s Transporter-16 mission.<\/p>\n<p>The launch marks a significant step forward for UK leadership in laser communications, spacecraft manufacturing, and satellite communications operations.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites, developed by Spire Global and AAC Clyde Space in Glasgow, are backed by UK Space Agency funding delivered through the European Space Agency\u2019s Pioneer Programme, which helps emerging UK space companies become new mission providers.<\/p>\n<p>The Pioneer Programme falls under the Advanced Research in Telecommunications Systems (ARTES) programme.<\/p>\n<p>The importance of satellite communications in critical industries<\/p>\n<p>The UK Government has identified satellite communications as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/uk-allocates-30m-to-strengthen-satellite-communications-sector\/67275\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">priority area for further support<\/a>, due to its increasingly important role in both civil and defence applications, from delivering broadband services to remote areas to providing secure connectivity for military operations.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this commitment, the UK Space Agency will invest more than \u00a3600m in satellite communications research &amp; development over the coming years.<\/p>\n<p>Optical inter-satellite links tested by Spire Global UK<\/p>\n<p>One of the satellites was launched by Spire Global UK to test an innovative optical inter-satellite link (ISL) payload.<\/p>\n<p>Designed to demonstrate high-speed laser crosslinks on a compact 6U platform, the mission aims to significantly reduce data latency for aviation, maritime, weather, and space weather services.<\/p>\n<p>The technology, once validated, will support near-real-time global data delivery across <a href=\"https:\/\/spire.com\/spirepedia\/nanosatellite-6u\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">nanosatellite constellations<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>AAC Clyde Space demonstrates the UK\u2019s high-volume production capability<\/p>\n<p>As part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aac-clyde.space\/case-studies\/xspancion\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">xSPANCION project<\/a>, two satellites were developed by AAC Clyde Space, in collaboration with several UK partners, including Bright Ascension Ltd., the University of Strathclyde, the Satellite Applications Catapult, Alden Legal and D-Orbit UK.<\/p>\n<p>These satellites represent the first in-orbit demonstration of the UK\u2019s emerging high-volume, low-cost satellite production and operations capability.<\/p>\n<p>The satellites will form part of VIREON\u2122, AAC Clyde Space\u2019s new constellation designed to enhance decision-making across agriculture, forestry and environmental management, delivering space-enabled insights to governments, industry and environmental organisations.<\/p>\n<p>Supporting growth in satellite communications across the UK<\/p>\n<p>Together, the missions strengthen British capability across optical ISL technologies, volume manufacturing, advanced operations platforms and high-skilled jobs across the UK supply chain.<\/p>\n<p>They also demonstrate Glasgow\u2019s position as Europe\u2019s leading city for small-satellite manufacturing.<\/p>\n<p>Henny Sands, Head of Telecommunications at the UK Space Agency, explained: \u201cThis Transporter-16 launch marks an important step forward for the UK\u2019s ambitions in next-generation satellite communications.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy supporting both breakthrough optical technologies and high-volume production methods, we are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.innovationnewsnetwork.com\/uk-space-agency-fund-for-major-satellite-communications-projects\/59861\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\">enabling British companies to lead<\/a> in the markets that will define the future of global connectivity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Companies can also apply to an open funding call from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/publications\/c-leo-programme\/about-the-c-leo-programme\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">UK Space Agency\u2019s Connectivity in Low Earth Orbit (C-LEO) programme<\/a>, with \u00a330m currently available to support the development of new components and technologies for satellite constellations, with a further funding call due to open later this year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"Three new satellites built in Scotland have launched aboard SpaceX\u2019s Transporter-16 mission.
