A Dunedin family say they are over the moon that a potentially \u2018\u2018life-saving\u2019\u2019 drug treating cystic fibrosis (CF) has got full government funding.<\/p>\n
Pharmac yesterday removed the requirement for CF patients needing to be at least 6 years old in order to receive subsidised Trikafta.<\/p>\n
Now, children diagnosed with the condition can immediately receive it.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We are pleased to be progressing a proposal with a positive impact for New Zealanders living with CF and their wh\u0101nau, as well as reducing some resource requirements for Health New Zealand services,\u2019\u2019 Pharmac\u2019s decision said.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We plan to work with the supplier and prescribing clinicians to ensure appropriate resources and education are provided to treaters, people with CF and their families.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
The announcement came as great news for one Dunedin family who were planning to move to Australia if they were unable to access the drug in New Zealand.<\/p>\n
Instead, Mackenzie and Maddie Palmer said they were \u2018\u2018over the moon\u2019\u2019 about yesterday\u2019s announcement and what it meant for daughter Maya, who is nearly 2 years old.<\/p>\n
The drug has been estimated to potentially improve children\u2019s lifespan by up to 25 years.<\/p>\n
Cystic Fibrosis New Zealand has said about 55 children a year would benefit from Trikafta.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018This decision is life-changing for our family – we can stay in New Zealand with our village and Maya has the chance at a healthier, happier life,\u2019\u2019 Mrs Palmer said.<\/p>\n
\u2018\u2018We are so grateful for this decision and we are grateful for the support of the Otago community.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n
CF is the most common life-threatening genetic condition affecting New Zealand children.<\/p>\n
It is an inherited condition some people are born with that mainly affects their lungs and digestive system.<\/p>\n
The couple found out about Maya\u2019s condition in the 30th week of Mrs Palmer\u2019s pregnancy.<\/p>\n
Maya – a regular at hospitals – was a \u2018\u2018very happy\u2019\u2019 child, Mrs Palmer said.<\/p>\n
