Poor Krypto. Anyone who\u2019s read Supergirl<\/a>: Woman of Tomorrow, the inspiration behind June 26\u2019s Supergirl, assumed it was coming, and the just-released trailer for the film confirms it: The story is driven by Supergirl\u2019s quest to save her beloved dog\u2019s life after the evil alien Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts) poisons him with a dart. \u201cAt least Krypto and I have each other,\u201d says Supergirl, (Milly Alcock<\/a>), a.k.a. Kara Zor-El, just before tragedy strikes.<\/p>\n

In early test screenings of last year\u2019s Superman<\/a>, audiences recoiled when Ultraman merely punched Krypto, and that moment was ultimately cut. But that film\u2019s director, DC Studios<\/a> co-CEO James Gunn<\/a>, told<\/a> Rolling Stone shortly after it came out that he was confident fans would be able to deal with the dog\u2019s far greater peril in Supergirl. \u201cRemember, this is a different movie than Supergirl,\u201d he said. \u201cSupergirl is a way more rock & roll film. It\u2019s a little bit rougher, in certain ways. She\u2019s a tougher character. She\u2019s not Superman at all. And so it\u2019s not the same. This movie really is for everybody. And so is Supergirl, but it\u2019s a little bit edgier in some ways than this film.\u201d<\/p>\n

The Supergirl trailer, scored to Jimmy Ruffin\u2019s 1966 Motown ballad \u201cWhat Becomes of the Brokenhearted,\u201d gives the most detailed glimpse yet of Jason Momoa<\/a>\u2018s performance as the fan-favourite intergalactic bounty hunter Lobo, and his Beetlejuice-like growl and swagger feel straight out of the comics. \u201cAren\u2019t you the ditz from that dive bar?\u201d Lobo asks Supergirl during one action sequence.<\/p>\n

\u201cFunny, that\u2019s what I\u2019ve been calling you,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n

\u201cTouch\u00e9,\u201d Lobo replies.<\/p>\n

The trailer also gives the first glimpse of David Corenswet<\/a>\u2018s appearance as Superman in Supergirl, via a sort of interplanetary Zoom call with Kara far from Earth. \u201cI was just touching base to see when you\u2019re coming back,\u201d he says. We also see Supergirl\u2019s dad, Zor-El (David Krumholtz), placing her in her escape spaceship as the remains of Krypton crumble around them.<\/p>\n

The film\u2019s director, Craig Gillespie, said <\/a>early this year he was excited about the uniqueness of the film\u2019s portrait of its lead character. \u201cShe\u2019s got a lot of baggage and a lot of demons coming into this, which is very different than where Superman is in his life,\u201d he said.\u200a\u201dIt\u2019s really surprising, the headspace that she\u2019s in and the journey she goes on.\u201d<\/p>\n
