Crews working on the highly anticipated M28 motorway linking Cork to Ringaskiddy have provided a major update as works near completion. A new roundabout at Barnahely is 95% complete.<\/p>\n

The east side will soon be open to pedestrians and cyclists, and traffic management will switch to the western edge of the road to facilitate further works.<\/a> The works will see over 60% fewer vehicles through Shanbally and Ringaskiddy, leading to cleaner, quieter villages with safer local roads.<\/p>\n

Cork County Council<\/a> issued an update on the project saying: “In Ringaskiddy, the main focus of works continues to be at Loughbeg and Ringport. Surfacing works at the tie-ins and within the business park are nearing completion. The brick paving of the roundabout central island is 95% complete.<\/p>\n

“The footway and cycleway works on the east side of the R613 in Barnahely are nearing completion. The area will soon be opened to pedestrians and cyclists and the traffic management will switch to the western edge of the road, either side of the Johnson & Johnson entrance.”<\/p>\n

The M28 Cork to Ringaskiddy Motorway Scheme involves the construction of 11km of roads connecting the N40 to one of our largest pharmaceutical hubs. The project will alleviate pressure on the strained N28, which wasn’t built to handle the volume it has seen in recent years.<\/p>\n

In December of last year, a website launched<\/a> offering the public an up-close and personal look at the project. The website features everything from construction updates and project maps to 3D visualisations of major junctions, so people can get a real feel for the project before its expected completion in summer 2028.<\/p>\n

The 3D tour currently shows what the upgrade works will look like at five major junctions: Rochestown, Maryborough, Carr’s Hill, Shannonpark and Shanbally. Live traffic updates are available on the website, which show estimated journey times for commuters driving towards Cork city from Ringaskiddy and the Shannonpark Roundabout, located just outside Carrigaline.<\/p>\n

Live traffic cameras are also installed, providing commuters with real-time information on traffic conditions along the busy road. Work on the project commenced last April after receiving the green light from the Cabinet.
