A Dangerous Lyfe). His overweening confidence is fueled by sustained chart success \u2014 since 2022, all of his projects have debuted in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart \u2014 and a sense that he deserves mention as a leader in mainstream rap. \u201cI feel like now is that time where I\u2019m coming out of that stage \u2014 where I\u2019m presenting me,\u201d he told Apple Music host Zane Lowe earlier this month, explaining why he\u2019s no longer hiding his face with a balaclava mask and dodging media appearances.<\/p>\n

\n\tAlas, much like the ever-changing and fiercely debated internet underground<\/a> out of which he emerged, rap-heads continue to wrestle over whether Yeat is truly an innovator or merely the glossy sum of his predecessors\u2019 labors. ADL reveals traces of DNA from Future, Trippie Redd, Playboi Carti, Lil Peep, Travis Scott, and innumerable others who transformed melodic rap from an Auto-Tuned diversion into a vibe-y inflection of late pop capitalism that often doesn\u2019t sound like hip-hop at all, even when one considers that late-Seventies Bronx pioneers like Cold Crush Brothers and the Furious Five did plenty of pitchy harmonizing, too. Yeat\u2019s greatest attribute is how he melds his influences into something uniquely beguiling and irritating, like hyperpop excised of its queer inflections and repurposed for all-night gaming and vaping sessions. Past albums like Lyf\u00eb and 2093 were best experienced as hourslong excursions into illegible rage-rap experiences that washed over the listener, with Yeat\u2019s voice muttering his harmonies amid glitchy laptop bangers.<\/p>\n

\n\tThe biggest shift in ADL from Yeat\u2019s past work is that his voice sounds much clearer. Yes, he still touts his appetite for a \u201cbad bitch\u201d in nearly every cut. But he enunciates his words, a technique that not only allows the listener to understand what he\u2019s saying, but also inevitably slows the velocity of his music. On Reddit, fans are complaining<\/a> that the album signals a shift into the familiar arena dynamics that every platinum rapper post-Jay Hova eventually embraces; after all, Kid Cudi makes an appearance on \u201cNo More Ghosts,\u201d a title nod to Cudi\u2019s 2018 collaboration with Ye, Kids See Ghosts<\/a>. As music journalist Bill Flanagan once wrote about punk\u2019s calcification into New Wave in the Eighties, \u201cThere were only two things they could do; they could be like the [Sex] Pistols and break up after one album (and one overdose), or they could be like the Ramones and stand there forever, wearing the same clothes, playing the same song, and never changing.\u201d After conquering the internet underground, perhaps Yeat believes that stadium status is all that\u2019s left.<\/p>\n

\n\tTo his credit, Yeat crafts some nice bangers on ADL, like the trap hammers on \u201cGriddl\u00eb,\u201d and the digital bounce of \u201cMy Time,\u201d the latter featuring Swizz Beatz\u2019s trademark shouts and ad-libs. Dozens of contributors, including rising producer BNYX\u00ae (who delivers a memorable wallop on \u201cWhat I Want\u201d) ensures that the beats flow in a sweet and gelatinous current. Yeat remains a lyricist of limited depth, incapable of writing a strong bar other than to reassure us that he\u2019s \u201cgeeked up\u201d off molly, \u201cPerkies,\u201d or something else. His vocal tone, which he sometimes transmutes into a drunken garble or a childlike chirp, are his best assets, helping him blend and push the tracks along without quite elevating them.<\/p>\n

\n\tADL features some oddball guests, from Youngboy Never Broke Again (who strikes a menacing presence on \u201cFace the Flam\u00eb\u201d) and Don Tolliver (\u201cGriddl\u00eb\u201d) to Joji (\u201cBack Home\u201d), Grimes (\u201cFace the Flam\u00eb\u201d), and, inexplicably, \u201cKing Kylie\u201d Jenner, whose lazy vocals on \u201cLet King Tonka Talk\u201d have all the charm of Uber Eats stunt casting. Elton John\u2019s \u201cSomeone Saved My Life Tonight\u201d is sampled for the opening of \u201cLose Control.\u201d But rather than use the occasion for harrowing introspection, Yeat simply raps some more about how poppin\u2019 pills makes him lose control.<\/p>\n

\n\tAmid an hour of bars about how the \u201conly girls I fuck with are tens\u201d and how he\u2019s \u201cbustin\u2019 a nut\u201d on girls\u2019 faces, glimpses of humanity peek through the toxicity. \u201cNo More Ghosts\u201d finds Yeat harmonizing \u201cI\u2019m-a fuck you, leave you hollerin\u2019,\u201d then suddenly claiming, \u201cCan\u2019t see you, see me crying.\u201d On \u201cSilk Fac\u00eb,\u201d he claims that he wants to make changes in his life, only to admit that he\u2019s too high and \u201ccan\u2019t feel my face\u201d to follow through. \u201cUp From Here\u201d opens with the warm voice of British singer Tyler Lewis, which inspires Yeat to claim, \u201cI\u2019m at the point of my life, yeah, I\u2019m thinkin\u2019 I need me a wife.\u201d It also leads to the previously mentioned boast about being a generational talent. Longtime Yeat fans may wonder if ADL means he\u2019s abandoning his punkish early work for something pleasingly middlebrow.
