Apple<\/a> would typically prefer iPhone users to always update to the newest version of iOS to get the latest security patches, but it\u2019s making a rare exception to protect iOS 18 users from the recently discovered DarkSword exploit<\/a>. The company confirmed to Wired<\/a> that it is issuing a rare \u201cbackported\u201d security update for iOS 18 devices on Wednesday to patch the DarkSword vulnerability without requiring users to upgrade to iOS 26.<\/p>\n

The move shows just how seriously Apple is taking the exploit, which can silently pilfer data from unprotected iOS devices just by visiting an infected website. People running iOS 26, the latest major version of iOS released last year, are already protected. However, iOS 18 users who don\u2019t want to upgrade, whether unwittingly or to avoid Apple\u2019s new liquid glass aesthetic, were left vulnerable.<\/p>\n

Apple\u2019s own App Store platform numbers from February<\/a> showed that around 25% of devices were still running iOS 18, which means hundreds of millions of devices are potentially vulnerable to DarkSword. Apple previously said it was releasing similar security patches for devices that are unable to upgrade to iOS 26. Now that DarkSword has leaked publicly<\/a>, it\u2019s much easier for more hackers to deploy, which is likely why Apple decided to issue this rare security update for iOS 18.<\/p>\n
